I was speaking from five years of town-committee experience, albeit in a different state.

Teacher's unions long ago locked in premium-tier healthcare as a permanent benefit. It doesn't matter that now such coverage barely exists and is three times or more the cost of the best coverage most of us can get... it's in the contract, they ain't giving it up and thus communities pay through the nose to get and provide this elite-level coverage.

When my daughter taught in DPS, I don't recall that her healthcare package was anything special in coverage or in cost. I know her salary was nothing to get excited about. If I recall correctly, there is no teachers union/collective bargaining in Douglas County. I know the pay is poor, especially compared to neighboring districts, while housing costs are very high.
