There is an area between Centennial, Lone Tree, and Parker where many businesses have an Englewood address. The American Furniture Warehouse over there, for example, has an address of 8820 American Way, Englewood CO. It is not the only address in the area like this.

I know sometimes an address can be in one city but is served by a post office in a different city so it has a mailing address in the second city (me, for example, I am in Denver city limits but have a Littleton mailing address).

However, this area is nowhere near the city of Englewood. In fact, there are 2 or 3 other cities between this area and Englewood. Does anyone know how on earth these places have Englewood mailing addresses? Is/was there a neighborhood or CDP called "Englewood" down there, similar to how there is a Denver neighborhood called Berkeley but also a CDP north of Denver called Berkley (slightly different spelling I know, but you get what I mean).

There's a story here, and I'm curious.

The mailing address issue mainly stems from the years when large areas around Denver metro were not yet incorporated or annexed into any city. And the new "city" did not warrant a Post Office of its own.

Parts of Thornton has Denver Zip Codes. Broomfield and Westminster swap some areas, city vs PO.

FWIW, because the PO prioritizes the Zip Code, they allow use of the actual city name if you want.

Go here https://tools.usps.com/zip-code-look...?citybyzipcode
and lookup 80111 for instance.

Yeah, but Thornton and Denver are adjacent to each other, as are Westminster and Broomfield (and those 80111 neighborhoods). Englewood is nowhere near Parker.

But apparently in the olden days, Englewood was the closest city with a post office. Long before there was a Centennial or a Lone Tree. Same thing with the Littleton mailing address. It extends miles beyond the city limits of the City of Littleton.

I used to work near Parker and Arapahoe, and that had an Englewood post office address too. It covers a huge area

From the Englewood website:

Englewood Zip Code clarification

Quote:
There is some confusion about which Zip Codes are actually within Englewood's jurisdiction, as the U.S. Postal Service has designated some areas in Sheridan, Greenwood Village, Centennial, Cherry Hills Village, unincorporated Arapahoe County, and unincorporated Douglas County with Englewood mailing addresses,

The following list indicates Englewood Zip Codes and the areas they actually cover:

Zip Codes

80150 and 80151: City of Englewood’s Main Post Office and Annex Post Office (i.e. Post Office Boxes)
80110 and 80113: City of Englewood, City of Sheridan, and City of Cherry Hills Village
80111 and 80112: Unincorporated Arapahoe County, Unincorporated Douglas County, City of Cherry Hills Village, City of Greenwood Village and City of Centennial

Yes, it is.
Think 1880.
How many people lived between downtown Englewood and Castle Rock?

The postal service has an odd city naming convention here.

Highlands Ranch, the city sized subdivision, is Littleton in its mailing address. Yes the postmaster allows the use of Highlands Ranch as the city. If Lone Tree incorporated before Highlands Ranch, it most likely would be Lone Tree mailing address.

Littleton, the city, is in Arapahoe County. Littleton the mailing address covers parts of Arapahoe, Douglas and Jefferson County.

Englewood the mailing address was in use long before Centennial the city’s incorporation. Centennial came to be partly because of the Greenwood Village land grab.

And the Aurora Land Grab.

Thornton and Denver city limits don't touch.
