Wow. That puts everything lakeside speedway into perspective. It never dawned on me that these elite drivers were driving for one car owner. I read in one of the posts on the link that Chuck Starr won the 1977 championship. Never would have guessed that one. I'm almost certain that he built his own race cars along with his father and brother.

I lived in Denver in the late 50's at 530 S. Otis Street. I can't remember the name of it, but the elementary school I went to wasn't far away as I walked. I remember going to Elitch (sp) Gardens and I was on the Fred 'n Fae Show once for my birthday!
Anyone else live around that area back then?

Some of my best memories are riding the STREETCAR to the Saturday matinee with the main feature, news reels, cliff hangar (a 15 minute thriller that left you hanging at the end, enticing you to come back the next week), and cartoons. Sometimes the theatre would have drawings with your ticket and prizes. No tv in those days, just the wonderful radio shows..."I love a Mystery," and all the soaps. Those were the late 40's and early 50's.

How about those wonderful Christmas shop windows at the Denver Dry, May co, Daniels and Fishers?

For some reason, the grilled cheese sandwichs with pickles and chips always tasted so good (at Woolworths' downtown). There was a place downtown that served the BEST apple pie with cinnamon ice cream, ( a little bit of Heaven). The Denver Dry tea room on the top floor had great chicken ala king..there was a deli at the old cherry creek mall that had melt in your mouth chicken pot pie.(hummels)? I will never forget the Denver Drumstick, why was that so good? Did the chicken and ice cream just taste better back then???

We loved the speedway at Lakeside..............the picnics, the funhouse, those were happy moments for my family and friends....ahh....thanks for the memories!!

Best memory, my sister and I dressed up to go shopping "downtown", we had a favorite little cafe called the "Cup and Saucer". It was on a side street just off the main drag . We would go shopping and go there for the best hamburger. Then catch the bus to go back home to Lakewood.
When we did go to Denver Dry to have llunch, (that was really special), we had to be sure we were dressed up. Thinking back on that time , I'm glad we did that.

Default Nostalgia

Wow, I was looking for an answer to the simple question: When did the 16th Street Woolworth's close?

Haven't found the answer, but reading a few pages of comments has really stirred up some memories and feelings. I'll have to come back and read more when I have time. This is a very interesting forum!

I lived in Littleton from 1960-'68 and in Capitol Hill from '82-'94. The former were some of the worst times and the latter, some of the best.

I'll bet some people here knew each other way back when. Where has the time gone?

It took some searching but I found the year: 1993
Apparently Woolworth's closed 572 shops that year, and the venerable store in the old Symes building was one of them.
Here is the New York Times article

Here is the blog with old pics from Woolworths. Scroll down in the comments for a poster who worked there talking about Woolworth's final days in 1993.

I had fond memories of that store. My grandma used to take us there.
She would buy us whatever we wanted, and then we'd have lunch at the counter.
