My experience with Hai has been mixed. During their off-hours, I'm underwhelmed but on a Friday or Saturday night, they're fantastic. I think it depends who is working.

Spicy Thai on Oneida! Little strip mall store front with great fish and great prices. Try it!

I know just the place! LD buffet on Parker Rd. near Havana has an all-you-can-eat buffet with good sushi. It's very reasonable--I want to say about $12 on weekdays and $15 on weekends. I'm not a connoisseur by any means, but their buffet is a good way to get your fill of sushi without breaking the bank.

Sushi Den on Pearl Street now has a deli across the street. You can get the same quality of sushi that's served in the main restaurant for about $10. And if you show up 10 minutes before closing (8pm some days), they sell it at 50% off. Excellent sushi for $5. Yummy!

For those of you in the NW suburbs, Sushi Yoshi in Superior (across from the Target just off McCaslin) is solid; the owner is the sushi chef. Also, Sushi Uokura in Golden (just off Colfax just to the east of where Colfax and US6 intersect) is pretty solid. They don't get to Sushi Den levels of quality, but they make for a nice meal out if you live/work in the area and don't want to haul downtown.

Fellas, seriously, help me!

I forced myself to eat sushi three to four times. Becoz many of the women I socialize with literally orgasm over sushi food.

And each time I came dragging myself out and had to run to my car and hit 80mph beating every cop in town. Puking in my own car or in the public would be nasty

If you can't handle the raw stuff, consider the items that are cooked ....

ask your server.

A California roll, for example, has cooked crab and avocado and vege's in it ... nothing difficult there for you, is there?

Or how about salmon skin roll ... where the salmon skin is cooked?

Or shrimp sushi, which is a cooked shrimp (instead of ama ebi, which is the raw shrimp sushi)?

Octopus, eel, and squid are cooked, too. Have you eaten "calamari" in other places?

Some chefs will have a vegetarian sushi item or two.

Or ask for something that doesn't show up on many menu's, but is available at most places if you ask ... salmon or yellowtail collar. It's the cheek area of the fish, and it's broiled. It's very rich fish meat, very good stuff. You've got to pick through a bony structure to get to the meat, so it's something you can spend a lot of time on and be interested in the meal as it progresses. Even knowing to ask about this can make you look like your know your way around a sushi bar. Order this item early on because it typically takes awhile to prepare and broil.

Don't forget that there's soup, seaweed salad, or conventional salads to round out your meal.

The bottom line is that there's a lot of items available that aren't raw that you can order that will make you look like you really enjoy a sushi bar with your date without challenging your digestive system. Focus on what you can eat and consider that you don't have to eat a lot to have a enjoyable meal and social time there. Part of the fun of a sushi bar is to eat a little of this and a little of that as a progressive meal ... you don't have to order everything at the beginning for a meal ... so it's easy to order a couple of items, eat those, then order a couple more ... and so forth, until you've passed the time for the social aspects of the meal. You can have fun, a good meal, and your date can satisfy their cravings for the raw stuff ....

"Cheap?"

If there's one thing you don't skimp on, it's sushi.

Little known fact:

By US law, ALL fish intended for raw consumption by human beings MUST be frozen at some point.
