I just saw on CNN that there is a tornado watch in northern Denver.
I've been seriously considering moving out to Denver, but this is scary..
Does this happen often in Denver?

ha! not really. Not in Denver metro anyway. They usually happen out in the rural areas where there are plains, I'd say east. This one is north of Denver, about an hour and a half away. Don't worry, it's not an issue.

News media just had a first-hand account of tornado damage in Windsor, north of Denver. Tornadoes are not common along the Front Range, but can and do occur on occasion, including in Denver metro, contrary to what some people post. Usually, they are of the F0-E to F2-E magnitude. The big F4 and F5 monsters occur seldom in Colorado--usually far out on the Eastern Plains when they do. As I have posted numerous times, however, big hail is very common along the Front Range and out onto the Eastern Plains--golfball-size (which can dent the hell out of automobiles, wreck roofs, and break windows) has occurred in a couple of locations today. If big thunderstorms with potentially damaging hail bothers you, Colorado's Front Range--including metro Denver--ain't for you.

The tornado is actually near Fort Collins, about 45 mins north of Denver. Tornados do not happen frequently here but they certainly can happen. The news is reporting that the Fort Collins tornado is very large.

The one near FC is "huge", according to eyewitnesses. Another big one has touched down just west of Dacono, near Longmont. Power is out in Greeley and a lot of FC, so latest info slow to arrive.
As Jazz stated, these things usually occur east of Bennet.

From the Denver Post:

Storm heading for Fort Collins
Quote:
The town hall in Windsor was hit by a tornado this morning, but no injures were reported. Schools in the area were in lockdown.
Colorado State Trooper Ryan Sullivan said the tornado has caused multiple crashes and multiple injuries on highways in Weld County. Colo.

Sometimes. According to the National Weather Service, there have been 12 tornadoes touch down in Denver since the year 1950, the last being in 1993. I think the last storm that actually caused damage in Denver was 1988. Note that this is for the city of Denver. There have been other storms in the greater Denver metro area.

Weld County, the location of this storm, receives tornadoes relatively frequently this time of year, so this is not entirely unexpected. If tornadoes touch down in neighboring Larimer or Boulder counties, that would be pretty newsworthy as tornadoes are rare that far west (though they do happen). A northwest moving storm, like this one, is the type of storm that could cause such a thing.

It's actually blue skies in Denver right now as I type this, so the action is apparently up north.

I used to laugh every time there was a tornado in the L.A. area - they can happen in winter. They'd interview people on the news who would be screaming, "This doesn't happen in L.A. This is insane!" I guess they had short term memory loss since they happen every few years - similar to here, F-0 or F-1 that just stirs up a trailer park and then goes back up.
