My husband is interviewing for a job in Littleton. If all goes well we will be moving there soon. I would like some advice on what Littleton and the surrounding areas are like. We have 4 kids, so good schools are very important as well as safe neighborhoods. I am also wondering about how much taxes are (property, sales, income etc.). Finally, what are housing prices like? Can we find a home in a nice area for under $300,000?

Thanks for any information you can share!

Littleton and basically the whole south metro area are safe with good schools. Douglas Co. school Dist. hasa great reputation. 300K is reasonable; gets you a clean, comfortable place. Its probably on the the lower end of what a family of 6 is hoping to have, though.

Where are you from and what are your expectations for comparison?

You can get a nice 4 bedroom house in Littleton, Highlands Ranch or Roxborough for $300k although if you are comfortable spending a little more you will get a larger house with nicer finish work. All of these areas are safe, homes are typically tract homes on 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft lots. I like Highlands Ranch, it is a very well planned community with miles of walking trails a fair amount of open space and numerous shopping centers. Property taxes will likely be between $2,000 and $2,200 per year and Highlands Ranch HOA dues are $114/quarter. Sales tax will vary from city to city, but most will be around 6%. Douglas County schools are very good, you may want to pull up specific schools on greatschools.net.

Dan and Ben covered things well, all I would add is that the city of Littleton proper has its own school district, which has a great reputation. There are areas around the city that have Littleton addresses, but may not be in Littleton, so the local school may be a Douglas County, Cherry Creek, or Jeffco shool (which all are good districts).

"Littleton" could be Littleton, Highlands Ranch or South Jefferson County.

You can get a 5 bed home in HR for $300,000 or a bit more, if you don't mind a bed or two in the basement.
