yeah, I really don't think it was the lyrics that had them all a fuss. And judging by Charlie Brown's statements, he sounds much more mad that she broke tradition. He's already said that "they were duped". But then he goes on and on about that and that's when it gets ridiculous.

downtown: It does seem like a media ploy the more I think about it. But from their perspective, I guess people hate to be surprised, and every year is the same with the natl. anthem. So maybe Hickenlooper might say, hey, I asked you to sing this, not that. But for everyone else who didn't know what was going on, what's the big deal?

then what's the point having anthem if people felt like changing it when they are suppose to sing for the public? The anthem has nothing to do with race then when it was wrote. It was about the revolution war. So, tell me. heir fight for feeling about been black is stronger then patriotism or nationalism?
If their feeling so strong about their motherland, they can call the motherland the 2nd home...

I am so confused by your post myselfdotcom.

ok, so here goes: your first sentence - what? She didn't change the anthem, just agreed to sing one anthem but then sang another one.

I agree, I think, the natl. anthem is not about race, necessarily.

Some people's thoughts about feeling and being black probably do stand over patriotism. Heck, I struggle with that too. I mean, here we are, all pompous and greedy, stomp all over an entire nation of people, kill them, slaughter them, rape them and then force them to the crappy parts of the land? Not so patriotic I guess.

And the motherland part? That's just strange. You know that many scientists (and I believe many of the thinking public, I stress thinking) believe that man evolved from Africa, hence the motherland thinking.

I tend to think that this is a media ploy- why else would she do it? It makes you wonder what enticed her to get up there and do that. I do know that it took some serious courage on her part!

Well, it certainly made the local news in Philly and NYC this evening as well. It came on about 15 minutes in though and was very slight coverage - although it was the big teaser of the night for the news.

And actually the Star Spangled Banner is from a poem written about a battle during the War of 1812, not the Revolutionary War (sorry, it's the 5th grade teacher in me coming out)

I think when asked to sing the National Anthem, one should sing the accepted anthem of that nation, not their personal idea of what the anthem should be, but I certainly wouldn't bother to call a news crew over it if I were witness to it. If it is some kinda of ploy, it's pretty weak.

Hey, it got me to look up the lyrics and have a little understanding for her point of vew, so maybe that was her goal. Getting people to think a bit.

And it did do that- looks how people are talking!

I was listening to them talk about it on the radio this morning, and it's amazing how upset some people are over this whole thing. I heard one man call into the radio station suggesting that we try her for treason, and another suggested that we deport her to France- that is just ridiculous.
