Why drive? Why not live somewhere within walking distance of a light rail station if your husband is working downtown?

I second the suggestion to live near the light rail line, SE or SW.
Neighborhoods that come to mind would be Washington Park, Platt Park, Rosedale, Harvard Gulch, Old Englewood, Old Littleton and University Hills.

I would suggest doing a search on this forum for info on those areas. I'm sure others will have more suggestions for you. All of the above areas are walkable and would be good for families but it depends on what you're looking for specifically.

You might need to adjust your budget a little higher, depending on how much room you need. There are two bedroom apts, and two bedroom apts, if you know what I mean. I seriously doubt you could find much in Wash Park, Platt Park or University Hills at/under $1000 that would be big enough for a family.

With that budget northwest Denver is your safest close bet with some walkability and an easy bike ride to work.

Parking downtown is going to cost you anywhere from 180-400 a month during working hours.
