Hi people, I've posted a couple times before, and now that I'm actually living here, I'm really loving denver. It's fantastic. So I was wondering, does anyone know of any places to learn how to oil paint? Rather than buy artwork to hang in my apt I figure I could just invest that money to learn how to do it myself. I live in capitol hill.

Many Thanks
Fred McG

Fred, do a web search for "colorado free university". You can also take classes at most of the local colleges. Ask them about auditing the class, (taking the class without being graded).

Welcome | Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design offers adult classes as well. One of my friends took a graphic design oriented course and was pleased with it.

You might try the following, none of which are far from you:

Art Students League of Denver (they're at about bayaud and grant, i think): Art Students League of Denver

Core Art Gallery (they're just off 9th and Santa Fe; despite the name, they do have at least life drawing classes): Core New Art Space-A Non-Profit Contemporary Art Gallery

Art Institute of CO (they're on 13th and Bway; a former tenant of mine took classes there): The Art Institute of Colorado

Also, take a look at your city's community centers. In mine, there are classes offered from everything to swimming lessons to gardening. There are painting and pottery classes as well as sports leagues. And they will likely be a lot cheaper than going to college for classes. If you've got a true passion for it after taking beginning courses, then you can enroll in college classes, but if it's just a whim to see if you like it, I wouldn't spend more than $50 to start. You can google the city and look up recreation classes.

Hey Fred, you might want to check out canvas and cocktails. They offer fun "date night" type painting classes. You can brown bag and now they even have their own bar. For more information you can check out their website at Canvas and Cocktails - Painting Classes Denver - Painting Workshop Denver

Default paint a painting and have fun

Welcome to Denver! There is a new place in the Stapleton Town Center - in a frame shop - Art & Framing at Stapleton - called "Paint by Wine". They provide everything - paint, brushes, canvas, glasses - you bring a bottle of wine and paint with an instructor. You leave the 2-hour class with a painting uniquely yours - certainly worthly of hanging on the wall. It is a fun evening - painting, drinking and meeting people. Check it out.
