my husband recently got a job working in the Denver area so we will be relocating soon! Where is the mystery question. We are expecting our first child this August. Denver seem to be a little out of our price range and a little to busy for us. We would like to find a smaller town but with lots of outdoors activities. Yoga studio would also be nice to find. Any and all opinions and info is greatly appreciated!

How long of a commute do you want? You could consider Golden or Evergreen if you want the mountains right in your backyard, or if you're willing to drive a bit to them could also look at Castle Rock or Parker. There are also many suburbs of Denver that maintain a small-town feel, if you're willing to live in the Denver suburbs.

In what part of the "Denver area" is his job? Is it in Downtown Denver itself, or the Denver Tech Center, or some other area? That can make a huge difference when trying to select a place to live --- and what direction from Denver to choose if he wants to avoid the commute from hell!

I'm in the same boat, looking for a small town around Denver. Really looking at Evergreen/Parker areas. I live in Sacramento now, and can the commute around Denver be as bad as it is here in California? I hear of the hellish commute in Denver, but how does it compare to here? I guess I will know in 2 days, because we leave for Denver to check the place out.

My husband is a field geologist so he will travel all around Colorado, we just wanted to be somewhat near the city. We love the mountains!! The driving time to the city is not critical we just need somewhere affordable!!

Trying to read between the lines of your postings....it 'sounds like' he doesn't have to sit in an office in Denver 5 days a week. If true, then you DO have a lot of latitude on where to locate.
As a Field Geologist, he may appreciate being near the Colorado School of Mines, out in Golden, been there doing RR research with a pal, great school with a very full library of info that may be of use to him.
Did I just happen to say that Golden in one of my favorite "small" towns? It really is cool. AND it is right up against the mountains. Just about everything you want, and the drive into Denver isn't 'horrible' at all from there, busy, but not horrible. Golden is somewhat more affordable than Denver proper.
To try and give you a snapshot....IMO, Golden is at the far western end of the suburbs sprawling west out of Denver, but VERY nice. Seems to have an identity of its own.
Use the Search this Forum tool with key words like Golden or Yoga or whatever is your interest. Search for houses on realtor.com or your favorite MLS site to get a feel for prices.

I just got a job in Bloomfield and will be moving with there with my husband and animals in April '07. It is interesting to me that there are like-minded people who are all relocating at the same time! "Small town feel" sounds sweet as I grew up in rural Wisconsin. My husband, on the other hand is a mixed race Brazilian from Sao Paulo who plays jazz. Don't know how our mutiracial mix will go over in CO-so we are looking in the Boulder area.

Sambagirl, I honestly think that your situation with a mixed race family would be totally irrelevant in any of the towns and areas that you would be looking at near where you would be working.
It sounds as if you want a small town feel yet is open and progressive. One town that you might look into that is near Boulder and Bloomfield is Niwot. My son who is 35 with two grade school age girls lives there and just loves the little downtown, the school system and the feel of the neighborhoods. As with any nice town within Boulder county it is going to be on the pricey side.

Actually, there are no small towns close to Denver. I agree about Niwot, but it is at least 30 miles from Denver and is still more of a Denver/Boulder suburb than a small idependent town. In fact, it is not even incorporated, nor is Evergreen (there's no there there). Most people in Niwot work in Boulder and environs. When we moved to Louisville 25 yrs ago, it almost fit the definition of small town near Denver (about 25 miles), but even then, most people worked either in Boulder or Denver or their suburbs. It had 5000 people then, 20,000+ now. It's more of a suburb than anything else, even with its downtown full of restaurants, trinket shops, and a library. The change has been both good and bad. To re-iterate, all the communities that have been mentioned are really dependent on the Denver economy, and in many cases run into one another. Broomfield itself is fine and seems to have more of a sense of community than many suburbs. My kids were on the Broomfield High gymnastics team for 7 yrs total, so I got to know the place fairly well. To the person looking for a yoga studio, one nice thing about most communities out here is that they have public recreation centers which usually offer yoga classes. Broomfield has a lovely new rec center.
