My boyfriend is starting a grad program at Mines in Golden, but I want to still live in Denver. I've looked into the areas, and am thinking maybe Highland, Tennyson, Berkeley so that it would be slightly closer to Mines. But, I really want coffee shops, restaurants, and at least a couple good bars within walking distance. Any ideas? Also, we have a dog, so I'd love to be near a dog park or in a neighborhood filled with dogs. That way, I can make friends too . Suggestions?

I agree, Golden. You might want to take a look at downtown Arvada. LoDo is a little farther east but has that vibe you seem to be describing.

You point out in your wording, "unmarried couple". I would stay in Denver verses Golden or Arvada. Both nice areas and close to the School of Mines but the vibe in Denver would be more conducive to your lifestyle. The Berkeley neighborhood is good and close to some bars, but west Highlands, 32nd and Lowell will be right up your alley. Mead Street is a great place to grab a burger and listen to live music. Tons of great restaurants right there and very close to Berkeley Park for your dog run and close to I-70 to get to Golden within minutes.

Default Belmar -- downtown Lakewood

I am a grad student at Colorado School of Mines but also wanted more shops, nightlife and coffee shops (more culture!) similar to downtown Denver. My husband (who also works in Golden) and I chose Belmar, the downtown of Lakewood on Alameda and Wadsworth. It is an easy drive to Golden against traffic and only 10 miles. They have art studios, coffee and tea shops, movie theater, retail shops, etc. Once a year at the end of summer we have the Italian Festival... so much fun! Hope that helps.

Personally, I love the Platt Park area and the surrounding neighborhoods (Highlands, Riverfront, Ballpark, LoDo). Interesting people, architecture, historical districts, museums, restaurants, activities, light-rail, etc.. It provides a little urban flair in a State that has very little of it.

The DTC and the surrounding neighborhoods, on the other hand, are fine, but it's general suburbia and not very distinct from anywhere else in the country. However, there are nice parks, schools, etc.. so "to each their own"..
