Thanks for the memories. East Colfax looms large in my Denver experience.
I graduated from East High, and spent many an hour on that south lawn.
Not to mention many a concert at both the Ogden and the Fillmore (also when it was Mammoth Gardens)....and lingered over many a coffee at the Kitchen, bifteca at the Greek Cafe, and books at Capitol Books etc etc etc.
I hope that the Tattered and Twist and Shout are doing well in their new location.

WOW! 23 years since I saw any of that. So much changed, so little the same. As I recall...the Bluebird was a porn theatre in the 70's 80s? The McD's by the Cathedral...guy tried to sell me some hashish at the counter(!)in '72. I was 3 months sober and so tempted.
One of those store fronts a block or 2 up from Mcd's used to be a gentlemans shoeshine parlor....circa '70. The "shoeshine ladies" wore short skirts and there were mirrors on the wall opposite the seat....never went in there...didn't have to, they worked on the sidewalk in front of the store during the summer! Nothing illegal, just poor taste and exploitation, but stuff like that at age 18 is embedded forever in your memory.

Thanks for the comments everybody. Some great stories. Actually livecontent, I think this stretch of Colfax does have quite a bit of yuppie-ville overpriced stuff, mixed in with the older mainstays. It's definitely a'changin'. What I think would be really cool would be to photograph the next stretch to the east-- getting into the grittier parts of east Denver and downtown Aurora. That's where it really hasn't changed much in years, other than the ethnic composition of the demographics. Only thing is I don't feel safe walking too much farther east on that road-- especially in the Aurora section-- especially with a camera in hand.

Great pictures. The first time I lived in Denver, I lived in two locations just off Colfax, so I know this area well. But you forgot the new Arogonaut Liquor! I went in there the other day and it's pretty sweet. I love the building and the "champagne glass" sign.

I got a picture of Argonaut's. I didn't post it because it didn't come out that great. It actually was lightly snowing for a brief moment. You want it, here you go:

Nice pics vegaspilgrim. I don't think Colfax really deserves the reputation it gets. I mean I know theres crime that takes place there but I've been down that street and theres tons of little shops and stores and stuff like that. Theres also alot of people that are walking around too. To me it doesn't really seem to get that gritty until your almost out of Denver into Aurora, and even that doesn't look that bad compared to the bad parts of eastern cities like Cleveland and Chicago.

You got pics of just about everything but my favorite spot, Sancho's!
Most excellent tour otherwise, thanks for sharing.

Actually, I'll take issue with that. I bought in the Ruby Hill neighborhood and Ruby Hill proper has a lower crime density than the areas surrounding the Mississippi and Federal corridors. I researched the crime density maps from DPD before buying. I do have an alarm system, but I have not been a victim of crime in my first 6 months here. It's actually a quiet neighborhood and I still have great proximity to some of the more posh neighborhoods (Pearl Englewood and Wash Park).

Not true, Colfax has been gentrified to at least Monaco for years.

It is not unsafe anywhere in my opinion. Past Yosemite it does get "Hispanic" until you hit Fitzsimmons, but that does not translate to dangerous.

There are pockets from 20th to 13th that can be sketchy at night east of Yosemite; generally around the high density buildings but Colfax itself is well trafficked, well lit and policed heavily.
