Since most people don't know the name of their elected officials, it's simply using the lowest common denominator by using the President to place blame for our problems.
I have no problem with people complaining about the president, or any other elected official. I can remember many a family reunion where the men would start talking and the opening statement would be "The ( president, governor, senator, county commissioner, etc) is a jerk." I don't like vilification. I have never liked hearing stuff about Obama supposedly being a terrorist, a socialist, etc. Bush was not as dumb as a lot of people made him out to be. That kind of thing.

I think people should know who their elected officials are, and not blame the president for the failings of their county commissioners, city councilmen, state senators and reps, US senators and reps. I don't buy the line that Obama is just a metaphor for all these people.

You are correct. However, just because WE know who our elected officials are at the local level doesn't mean that anyone else does. Since there isn't an IQ exam requirement in order to vote, I know many people who literally stood in line, voted only in the space for the President and left. Those people don't realize that if you want a stop light at the end of your street or you care about whether they raise the fee on registering your vehicle, voting for the President isn't going to make one bit of difference. I'm not saying it's right, but even watching Jay Leno and his "Jaywalking" clips...people know who Obama is but very few of them knew Biden. Most knew Michelle Obama but not many knew Condoleeza Rice. That's pathetic no matter who you voted for.

It doesn't matter whether you "buy" the line that people blame the president because he's the only one they can pick out of a lineup. That's the sad facts. Again, we'll just have to agree to disagree.
