You should stay where you are. If you get a job here, then you can focus on nearby locations that fit your needs. There are no bad areas, or bad shopping area, or bad schools - "bad" is solely defined by the individual.

The area is too large to settle in and then drive somewhere else for work.

Just because you are used to something, doesn't make it right.

I agree with those who advise to find the job first. You will surely be able to find a nice house and neighborhood in a decent driving distance. It will help narrow your search. DH got a job in Littleton, so we live in Highlands Ranch. We also looked in Littleton/Jefferson County and Centennial. We didn't want to commute, so we crossed Parker, Castle Rock and Roxborough off the list. Would you want to be on the plains w/ views of the mountains, or up next to the foothills? That's another consideration.
