My husband just landed a job offer at the Federal Bldg near 6th Ave and Kipling... we're looking to rent for the first year but would like to end up buying a house near work. My parents live near Hampden and I-25, so I'd like to be a reasonable distance from them (like 10-15 min) and no more than 20 min to my husband's work. We're relocating from PHX, so I'm not familiar with that area. WE have visited a few times, but we've always gone and looked at Aurora, Highlands Ranch, etc and that might be too far. We have a 3yr old, so family friendly neighborhood and good schools are a must. Would prefer the not so cookie cutter neighborhoods if possible. A good size fenced yard with lots of trees would be ideal. Hoping to keep rent under $1600/mo for a 3bed/2bath at least 2000 sq ft.

Thanks in advance!!

Start with Denver, Lakewood, Englewood.

It's going to be a little difficult to get a 2000 sq footer, with good schools, trees, that is close to both I-25/Hampden and 6th/Kipling for under $1600.

If you are willing to bend a bit (smaller house/yard), you could probably find something near Washington Park or DU in your price range.

Check out the Applewood neighborhood. It's very near your DH's work. Search the forum and you'll have lots of info on it.

Good neighborhood to live in and close to work but definitely not within 10-15 minutes of parents house.

I agree with Applewood. It's really more important to be close to DH's work (IMO) than to be near your parents, as DH will be working every day, and you'll probably visit your parents less frequently. Most of the housing in the burbs is somewhat cookie-cutter, and even in the city, the homes are all very similar in any given neighborhood except the high-end ones.

I agree the husbands commute is more important. Within the confines of the parameters OP gave, Applewood doesn't fit. However, if it were me, I would include it. I would also recommend they look at SW Lakewood (say bounded by Wadsworth to C-470, Hampden to Mississippi, centered along Jewell). Nice older houses with horse properties mixed in. Mature trees, etc. Those would be in the middle and IMO would give similar qualities as Applewood.

I'd start in Green Mountain, go looking in Lakewood, Golden, Arvada, Wheat Ridge first...
