I have no idea about average prices for apartment but I think you will have no problem with 40,000 a year.

Denver's cost of living is about average for a U.S. city. Rent is probably below average, as you saw. The DU area that Katiana talked about is a very nice area, but given your situation you should look no further than Capitol Hill. It's a downtown neighborhood, relatively affordable for a city-center area, and mostly quite safe.

To answer your question, you should be able to get by just fine on $40k salary provided you can live within a budget.

Re: weather, I would suggest looking at some weather websites such as AccuWeather.com for monthly averages, etc. There are also many other weather websites to peruse. The snows are not frequent, and the snow is usually gone in a few days. Summers are hot, but not humid like Baltimore. (I once lived in Frederick.) The smog is not that bad. It's there, but there's far more hype than reality about it. There is a ton of information about weather on this forum. Check the index.

Being from Baltimore, I can tell Gazer that it's all good here. Fear not. Land a job and come on out.

Only thing I miss are the crabcakes from Faidley's or Snyder's. I don't miss the humidity, bugs, high prices, crowding and traffic.

The $1000 rent in Baltimore is more than here; IMO, reflects that DC workers have discovered they can live a lot cheaper in Charm City and take a MARC train to the DC area, a mere 40 miles away, driving up rents.

Denver is NOT noted for being a city that never sleeps. Much more muted here. Nothing like Times Square. The Inner Harbor meeting, greeting and eating space of B'more is in line with Denver's 16th Street Pedestrian Mall, minus the waterscape.

People are generally friendly. LOTS of people here from somewhere else. Tons of people in Baltimore are long-timers with multi-generational roots there, as are mine, back to the Civil War era.

Lots of culture and museums and show venues and eateries and watering holes and festivals and all 5 major league sports. Hardly any chance to get bored here. If you like outdoor sports, you can stay busy here all year.
