Colorado has a lot to offer. People move here from all over.

In the last year, I have helped people from VA, LA, FLA and AK move here.

No one yet from TX or CA. But if you want to move here from there, I'll help.

Yes, I am in Dallas and it's here as well. but I think for me personaly is I lived in Denver for a long time and I have gone back a few times since moving and it's just not the same anymore. Doesn't have the same 'Colorado' feel. I miss it a lot, but nothing stays the same.

So for me I finally decided to move on and not try and go back to a state that is nothing like I remembered. It's very californiazied. makes me sad.

I've lived in Portland, Seattle and now Denver. Portland rents are low right now because there's so much available, very dog friendly, and if I could stand the rain, I'd be back there in a second. I think it's a nice lifestyle and nicer places for the money. Great public transportation. The beaches are awesome in summer and Cannon Beach is dog central.

Seattle has lots of the downsides--expensive, terrible traffic, not as dog friendly, and RAIN (you like that though. It's my least favorite of the three by far.

Denver is usually nice weather (this summer is awful, but this winter was GREAT, sunny and hardly any snow). I find that what I get for the same amount of money here rent-wise is less than what I got in Portland, in not as nice an area. It is also quite dog-friendly, and I think it's a friendlier city than Portland by far.

So looking at your list:
Portland, $1200 a month gets you a cooler place
Portland has better restaurants of all sorts (I'm a foodie, and Denver is still a little difficult for me on that end; I go out with my friends and they're rave about a place that I'll love, and so I pretend :-)
Denver wins for weather and friendly people, hands down.
I see that some people have recommended the Highlands/Berkeley area, and I lived up there when I first moved here last summer but it's not that walkable (only a few blocks of anything in each area) and there's been a lot of crime, esp lately. Check the maps. One friend had her car stolen, another burglarized, Tootsies the nail shop robbed several times in a few weeks. I'd advise Wash Park for three reasons: it's prettier, easy access to Cherry Creek and downtown and Wash Park to walk your dog, AND lots of nicer places around to rent for $1200 or less that allow dogs.
If living out of the city, I've heard Evergreen is great. Good luck to you!

Thanks to everyone (who is left in the thread) for the responses. Let me clarify a couple of things:

1) We do not live/come from California
2) We do not like the rushed pace/traffic of southern cali
3) We have no ill feelings on Californians in general (I have no idea where that argument came from)
4) We currently live in Vegas and live approx. 25 mins from the Strip in a suburb out in the boonies. We wouldn't mind a 20-30 min commute into downtown, provided it's a great neighborhood we live in.
5) I play online poker for a living, so the "commute" would not be daily...it would be to go watch a show, a sporting event, or possibly dinner.

So, with all that said, the areas that have been suggested to us, so far are (in no particular order):

-Highlands
-Berkley
-West Highlands
-Sloan's Lake
- Capitol Hill
- Baker
-Wash. Park
-Stapleton

Now, as of right now, we're targeting a move day of @ Nov. 1st. We plan on taking a trip out there @ mid-Sept. or so to take a look at the city and various neighborhoods.

So with all that said, we've also been reading a bit about Evergreen. Any feedback on there? Also, any more input on other areas would be greatly appreciate, y'all!

Thanks!

It seems like anyone who mentions "that state" gets deleted but it was the #1 thing listed in your requirements so maybe that might be why people posted related comments. Evergreen is awesome. If you're familiar with LA (in that state), it's sort of the Topanga Canyon of Denver. It's a relatively short commute to downtown but it feels like you are in the wilderness. Houses start around $250,000 and go up to multi-millions. The average is probably around $500,000.
