Recently I've been very jealous of my friends in boulder who have such great bike riding and hiking out their back door. Now I've found a route from downtown denver that allows me to escape without getting in the car. Yesterday I took my bike on the C/D lightrail and about twenty minutes later got off at the mineral station. From there I rode a beautiful greenway trail to the park and looped around 25 miles back to the train station. Once I get in better shape I will be heading up deer creek canyon. I highly recommend this trip to any cyclist living downtown

You could also take the South Platte trail from downtown instead of taking the rail.

Yeah just ride it LOL.
You might also enjoy a shorter ride out to the Cherry Creek resevoir. You can hit the resevoir and ride around it for added length.
Shorter still, check out the Platte north of REI. There are various spurs that take you all over. I found a route this summer that takes me to the water towers over in Federal Heights from downtown with less than a mile of off-trail riding.
Another fun one is to ride out to Arvada or all the way to Golden on the Clear Creek Trail. Have a friend drop you off in Golden if you just want to do it one way and ride back.

i think that would add another 40 miles round trip? also the south platte trail from my house is not so nice- too industrial and a bit bumpy.
Thanks for the suggestions steve. I would like to do bear creek through morrison and golden and back on clear creak, but not sure I have the stamina yet.

Yeah it is about 20 miles from REI to the start of the park.
If you don't like the industrial sections of that trail you likely won't like anything to the North until you get past I-76 and things get more open. I don't mind it overall but I don't really care for the poo plant you have to ride past or the oil and gas facility that the Sand Creek passes.
Cherry Creek is a busy trail until you get out near Quebec. Then it opens up a little and drops in usage. My favorite alternative is to head north where it meets the High Line Canal and then ride that until it gets to the cemetery, cut through Lowry and out the north side and head back into the city either on the 13/12th ave bike lane or Montview.
