I am taking my my family (spouse & son 14 yrs old) on a autumn trip thru the Rocky Mountains on Amtrak - we've never ridden Amtrak. We will be arriving at the Denver station in mid October at about 7:45pm (e.g. twilight). We are booked at the Marriott City Center at 1701 California Street, which is about 3/4 miles away according to Google Maps. We will have a small amount of luggage, probably no more than what fits into a couple of largish daypacks.

My question: is it safe to walk down 18th street between the train station and the Marriott City Center Hotel at 8:30pm or so at night?

I understand Denver has a beautiful city center. We like to walk and enjoy the city at street level but if it's not safe, I'll schedule a cab.

Thanks.

It's completely safe to walk. If you want to be lazy, you can take the free rtd 16th St. mall ride.

Yeah, it's safe, although it's very possible that the train will be late.

I picked up friends who took Amtrak from San Francisco and the train was 12 hours behind schedule.

7:45 pm will be dark. Walk out of the station, pick up the Mall Shuttle, get off on Cali & 16th, walk two blocks.

They have a nice breakfast.

Not long ago, I took Amtrack to denver from Grand Junction to pick up a vehicle I purchased. Have ridden Amtrack previous, I love it. Regarding the station; no problems at all, there is adequate security there.

I had a similar experience with the westbound train from Omaha.

I'd definitely take the (unheated) 16th street mall shuttle. It's a bit faster and is free. Plus, it should be safer since there will be more people around as well as better lighting and random mall security. 18th should be fine as well, but 16th st. is more of the pedestrian-oriented downtown where Denver puts on its best face.

Downtown is safe...it actually has a lower crime rate the nearby neighborhoods. I've never had any problems.
