I have a 6th floor western facing balcony. The balcony has a roof over it (the unit above's balcony). The sun is intense in the afternoon. Can anyone recommend plants/dwarf trees (no annuals) that can withstand the afternoon summer sun and that I do not have to bring inside during the winter.

I bought two nandinas, which are said to be good to -10F. Will these hold up? Thanks

My favorite is Russian Sage. It is very drought tolerant and does well in the winter. It is very airy looking with light lavender/bluish flowers.
I have mine in containers that are placed in my rock.
Very easy to grow...the hardest part is Not watering them very much!

It's not the sun so much as the drying wind. They have to be watered year round, and a good thick mulch helps also. I can't imagine any potted plant withstanding the problems as there is not enough soil to keep the roots from freeze-drying.
