It's not particularly close to the IT hubs, though there are IT jobs in Jefferson Co. as well. DH worked in Golden for probably 15 years. That area seems to have more startups and small companies, plus it has the Fed Center in Lakewood. It would be 30 min. or so to downtown, possibly Broomfield; at least 30 min. to Boulder (another IT hub), and >30 min. to the DTC.

30 minutes is no problem... I am in Southern California, it currently takes me 35 minutes to go 19 miles at 7 AM. Frequently takes me 45+ minutes. I would rather trade off commute time for a nicer community as my wife is a SAHM and will be spending most of her time there.

The west side is nice, just possibly not practical. You'll have to see where you end up and then you can plan your search parameter.

If you have a possible job in Boulder - look from Arvada to Erie, including Louisville and Superior.

My concern would be losing a job in Boulder and then being forced to commute into Denver. The lead I have with a job in Boulder, I could probably work from home a couple days a week. Am I correct that Golden to Boulder is 20 miles? That doesn't seem too bad. I have commuted at least 40 miles/day for the last ten years.... I realize Denver weather will play into that.

I understand you think you can sacrifice your daily commute for a "nice" place to live, we are all telling you that you do not have to. There are plenty of "nice" areas close to where ever work is. And on a bad day your commute will at least double.

We have a different mindset here. Live closer to work, spend less time in the car and more time with your family.

Depending on where to where in Boulder and Golden, 20 miles sounds about right. It's not a bad drive, except when it snows heavily. Even in good weather, you have to allot at least 30 min, possibly more. I spent many a night waiting for DH to get home when he worked down there. Which brings up a point: you have to factor in the snow. This is not CA!

ETA: I just noticed that you said you'd have to factor in weather. I don't think you realize how much difference that makes. (JMO)

Good info thank you. I will start digging into those northern areas a bit more.

Can you point me toward neighborhoods with a residential character like I am seeing in Applewood? I.e. mature trees, large lots, no sidewalks, etc? Almost a semi-rural character?

There is only one Applewood.

I can point you in a direction for a neighborhood or an area, once you know which direction.

Interesting.... surprised by that. It reminds me of the area I grew up, Suffolk County Long Island. No sidewalks, modest homes on large lots. Semi-rural but still suburban.

I'm sorry, but I don't think of Applewood as "semi-rural". It's in the heart of the Jeffco suburbs. I'm not even sure you're right about no sidewalks. Virtually everywhere around here has sidewalks, and why would lack thereof be a good thing, anyway? It certainly reduces an area's walkability.

If you're looking for an area that is sort of 'on the edge' of the metro area, I'd once again suggest Louisville and Broomfield.
