I might be taking a job in Littleton and moving from Florida. My wife is an elementary school teacher. What is the teaching job situation in Denver/Boulder area? Layoffs everywhere? Any suggestions for an out of state teacher to be able to get a job next school year?

She's really good.

yes, layoffs everywhere. she should contact all of the school districts as soon as possible to find out if they are doing any hiring and, if so, when. Also check the private schools.

You asked about getting a job "next school year". I assume that you mean starting in August 2010 for the 2010/2011 school year. If that is a correct assumption, then she needs to start looking now as they hire in the spring for the next school year.

I would guess with the huge k-12 cuts from the state, that most school districts will not be hiring.
Later this spring the state legislature will set the school finance budget for 2010 - 2011 school year. Expected cuts are in the 6% range, but could go higher.

From COSFB.org: 2010 Update: How does Colorado rank in K-12 spending?
Colorado spends $1,919 less per pupil than the national average. In 2003 Colorado spent $551 less than the national average.

Districts are not hiring now. Teachers who do not have tenure are being laid off, and only they are being invited back as substitute teachers. That happened last year in the Littleton Public School (LPS) district. Denver Public School (DPS) district is closing a few schools, as did LPS did last year. Jeffco is struggling as well. DPS are hiring substitute teachers but for the far northeast quadrant (which is considered the Green Valley area- out by DIA).

Your wife will be up against all the new teacher 'grads' this spring. She needs to get her paperwork in for her CO license ASAP.
