Sorry for lack of responses. I'd been getting things together with graduation from college and moving from Vermont. I'm currently in Texas, and will be making a trip up to Denver next week to look at some apartments. I only recently started my job hunt, and will be visiting a few head hunters next week during my visit. There seem to be several entry-level positions around, and I've applied for some, but only within the past couple of days, so haven't given any time to hear back yet.

I'll try to make it more of a habit to post back here with experiences. :-) Thanks!

Thought it was time for an update. I've moved from Vermont to Texas to visit family, and from Texas have moved to downtown Denver.

I flew up to Denver for a week to look for apartments, and was lucky to find one that I am renting month-to-month. I've been here for about 3 weeks now.

I just got my first job in Broomfield developing software. I started my job hunt about 4 to 5 weeks ago, and this was my second offer. The first offer didn't care for my earrings and the way I cut my hair (I have a military-style high-and-tight), and since I'd have been traveling a lot and communicating with customers face-to-face, they asked that I take out all my piercings and shave my head. It wouldn't have worked out.

While I've only gotten 2 calls about jobs (out of the 15 or 20 resumes I sent out), I really feel that I had more of a response from my resumes when I put my Denver address on them. Many job postings specifically state "local candidates only."

So all in all, I am happy with my move here. Boulder is appealing more to me, and since I'll be working out of Broomfield, I will probably move out to Boulder in the next month or two.

Thanks again everyone for your advice and support; it is much appreciated!

Congratulations on the job! I agree -- if you're going to be working in Broomfield long term AND you like Boulder, you should probably move to Boulder.

Full-time permanent job. It's a junior position; as of now I'm developing tools for support techs to use to query a database for items that should be related but aren't.

I'm using C# and SQL Server for development, which is what I have the most experience in, but am looking into testing for Sun / Oracle certification to work with Java in a more long-term sense. I want to keep up on both.

Default Cogratulations

To the OP - congrats on the new job! I agree with the PP who said that if you like Boulder you should think about moving here. Believe it or not but not everyone in this town is an (insert your own expletive here) and you can do ok in IT especially if you include Broomfield.

What salary do they pay you for this type of junior position?

Did you use an application with a "local" address? If so, how did you go about getting one, and explaining it to the employer?

Congrats and welcome!

Usually appearance doesn't matter too much around here, but for customer facing gigs you do have to look generic.

Boulder is a cool town, have fun!

Oh, and I think I said this before, but the software dev community is small here in Denver/Boulder so a bad reputation can follow you around. It's really important to not burn bridges, which is pretty easy to not do - just a bit of advice as you start here.
