2 students shot, 1 man arrested at Deer Creek Middle School

Quote:
Two students have been shot at the Deer Creek Middle School this afternoon and the suspected shooter - an adult male - is in custody, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's department.

Mark Techmeyer, spokesman for the sheriff's department, said the two juveniles have been transported to a hospital.
The 2 students do not have life-threatening injuries, the shooter has been arrested. (The school is in JeffCo schools, in Littleton, not far from Columbine.)

Just heartbreaking. Scabs ripped off old wounds like this.

A month and a half from the 10th anniversary.

This was outside the school.

A huge hug for the staff who tackled the jerk.

Seriously, WTF is wrong with Colorado?!?!?!

Are they raising monsters here or something?

First Columbine. Then Platte Canyon. Then YWAM/New Life. Now this? You can't even throw a snowball in this state without hitting a place that's been shot up now.

I know these things happen everywhere, but it seems like Colorado is the worst. How did such a great state become the Slytherin House of America?

I went to look up where school shootings have happened in the past and on Wikpedia it says that there was another shooting at this same school in 1982.

Default Why so many shootings in Colorado?

With Columbine, Platte Canyon, YWAM/New Life, and now Deer Creek, it seems that Colorado is rapidly becoming the shooting rampage capital of America. Why? Colorado has a relatively low population, friendly residents, great (mostly) weather, and awesome scenery. How could such a setting be such a fertile breeding ground for deranged killers? I just don't get it.

I think that you have to take the emotion out of the stories and actually look at the facts. The examples you listed above have happened over a 10 year+ period. There are not more shootings in Colorado than other states. The reason these shootings get attention is (let's be honest) that they are in suburban, middle-class neighborhoods.

Shootings in South Chicago and East LA happen with way more frequency but are just treated like "any other day" by the media. What was scary in Columbine (for example) is that this was a school that most Americans could see their kids attending. It wasn't in a high-crime area, these kids weren't documented "trouble makers". When people hear of stories that could honestly happen to them, it's scary and that's why the media covers them. When people hear of a shooting in a high-crime neighborhood by gang members, most of us think "well, that's no surprise". Perhaps we should change our mindset but we also need to take a step back and not jump to conclusions that Colorado is some sort of breeding ground for gun violence. There are some things that need to be addressed but I don't think we need to start panicking.

Well one thing I've noticed is that it seems like anytime something bad happens in Colorado, it automatically makes front page headlines around the world. Even before Columbine. The JonBenet case, for example, would seem like an ordinary child murder case, but it is easily the most famous child murder case in the nation now. I guess the conclusion that can be drawn here is that the media in Colorado is way too good at getting stories out there.
