You guys do an amazing job of providing info' to tons of people (like myself) and so - THANK YOU!!

I'm looking to move to Denver - taking up a job and my Q's are :

1) Driving suggestions from Seattle - I 84 or I 90? What's of importance here is less mountain drvg..loaded up truck!

2) Places I shd break journey & any suggestions on the trip.

3) I'm looking to rent for the first couple of months so a 1 bed + bath in a nice, quiet neighborhood that's not too far a commute from downtown.

Any suggestions are very welcome!!

thanks

Sorry, I can't advise on the best route, but if you aren't pressed for time, why not take one that will give you the best scenery. It looks like I-90 would be the most direct but the scenery runs out by the time you get to the middle of Montana. After that, it's most plains. 84 has some good diversity, too, but don't connect with I-80 after Salt Lake. Take the longer route down to I-70. Much better scenery there than southern Wyoming. Break by not driving at night and enjoying the scenery by day. I haven't driven it myself so can't really advise on the breakes.

About 3), you may have seen Capitol Hill mentioned in other posts regarding renting and I agree. Capitol Hill/Cheesman Park area is a great downtown area not more than 2-3 miles from the Governor's Building at Broadway and Colfax. This area is well-served by buses, plenty of pedestrian/cyclist traffic, apartment rentals with rents ranging from 650$-1500$ for one bedroom apartments (based on amenties, maintenance), Stores (Kingsoopers, Whole Foods, Walgreens), quiet little pubs and on the whole, a safe and friendly neighborhood. Good luck!

I've never driven all the way to Seattle, but I've done Portland to Denver (I-84 to 1-80 to I-25) like a dozen times, and I've driven Denver to Troy Montana (almost Spokane) before (I-25 to 1-90). In terms of a scenic drive it's not even close - take I-90. The I-80 across Wyoming is the most awfully boring stretch of road in the entire US, and I-84 isn't much better. Google maps also says that from Seattle the I-90 route is the quickest (only by 34 minutes though). As to a loaded truck, as long as you stay on major interstates you won't have any issues.

I agree with another poster, I-84 to I-70 provides a very scenic route. It does, however, add an hour or two to the drive, makes you take state roads out of Salt Lake City in order to cut over to I-70, and means you're driving directly through Colorado's mountains (although on a perfectly drivable major interstate).

If it were me, I'd take the I-90 route. Half-way is Bozeman (10.5 hour drive). That's a good place to stop, and it's a beautiful, fun town.

Colorado is a large state - you can't live just anywhere and commute to just anywhere.

What is your budget, do you have a job, or will you need a job?

1. I-90, I did that drive 5 times last year (twice moving, the first time in a giant truck, the second time towing a trailer in a cargo van), you'll be fine. 4th of July Pass and Lookout Pass in Idaho are the toughest ones, but you'll make it up and down without a problem.

2. The drive itself is the best part of the trip.

3. Craigslist, only look at the ones with addresses in the ad. Some of them stretch the truth about their location, but we can help with that.
