I plan to move to the southern Denver area this summer. I must admit that I'm a bit concerned about bears. Should I really be? I love hiking and I want to know if there is even a concern in the Centennial/Englewood/Littleton areas. Please tell me whatever it is I need to know about the bear population!

I've lived in Colorado on and off for roughly 10 years and have only seen 2 bears. One was while hiking outside of Durango and the other was in town in Durango. No need to worry about bears.

Bears are NOT a reason to avoid the areas you mention b/c they are simply not around. Once in the two years I've been here, there was a small bear in Highlands Ranch and it made the news so clearly a "news-worthy event" and not the same old, same old.

Now the mountain lions....those you should worry about.

NO! I jest, I jest!!!!! Promise! (Mountain lions were my big fear before moving out here which is quite funny to me now. They must all be hanging out with the bears.)

Bears kill hundreds of people in Colorado every summer, some years thousands.

Don't be mean!

There've only been 27 or so fatal bear attacks in North America as a whole over the past 10 years - mostly in Canada, Alaska, and for some reason Tennessee. One has occurred in CO.

Being that you're moving from Texas, I'd be more afraid of the native bipeds.

Yeah, I've seen quite a few bears, and I live near there. There were at least 3 or 4 of them. Brown ones, and black ones, and even a polar bear. Oh yeah, this was at the zoo, but they stared at me while I was eating. Beware of eating sandwiches in front of bears!

They prefer Californians I have heard, but Texans are the second favorite, even though they taste a little like cactus.
