And yes, because I'm weird, I took a picture of one of the retro signs hanging from the ceiling at some point last year. I'm originally from the Pennsylvania coal region and some of the grocery stores still look like this. It reminded me of home.
It's still listed on the King Soopers site so someone will have to confirm. Those are some old school hangers at the one at Arapahoe & Holly too.

I went to Smartco at grand opening. I wasn't impressed and they didn't have anything in the sale ads to make me go there. I though/think Albertsons is better and am glad that I live near one of the remaining Albertsons stores and that there is a lot of selection by me (King Soopers, Safeway, Albertsons, Whole Foods, Sunflower Market, Target, Natural Grocers). The only thing not in my area is a Sprouts and I sent them a comment recommending the old Wild Oats at University & Orchard. We'll see!

That sounds like Stater Brothers in California. Every one of their stores I've ever been in looks like they built it in 1965 and never changed a thing.

Actually three major "conventional" grocery chains, plus Target and Wal-Mart, isn't really that bad and I don't think it's atypical for other cities. I'm not sure what we'd gain by adding a fourth conventional chain, other than possibly kill off Albertson's.

Everyone seems to like TJ's, and one would hope that the rumors of their arrival are true. We also don't really have anyone else who plays in TJ's niche of low-cost gourmet, specialty items, and wines.

To those planing to get on some of SmartCo's discounts, beware: SmartCo is no longer in control and their liquidator agency is advertising 10% off everything while raising prices 20-50% on some products.

IDK about that. It's hard to say how customers in a new market are going to react to a new store. Maybe they had a perfectly good plan, but it just didn't work out the way they expected. Then they realized early on, that it just wasn't going to work. So they decided cut their loses and shut down quick. A lot better decision then losing money for a long time, and then finally shutting down. Now they can redirect their resources to another marker, where they may have a better chance.

I'm a bit of a price hound when I grab groceries and I can attest to this. The "normal" products were not cheaper and I did not get "10% off listed price on these shelves" in spite of the signs.

I just drove by the King Soopers at Monaco and Evans and it is, indeed, closed. The sign has already been removed from the building facade. I'm surprised by this because I would have thought it would have at least warranted an article in the Denver Post or something. And you're correct -- it is still listed on the King Soopers website.

There's also apparently a new King Soopers at about Leetsdale & Cherry (?). Changes. . .

Interesting - don't see many vacant old King Soopers buildings around. Now vacant Safeway stores is a different matter - 5 within about 2 miles of me!

Yeah, it just opened! I'm not going near it until it's been open for a few weeks. It looked extremely crowded this morning when I drove by while on my way out for coffee. It's like a King Soopers Superstore -- it has a gas station and a liquor store, too.

It's odd because there is a location at Leetsdale and Monaco and another at Colorado Blvd and Ohio, so the Leetsdale and Cherry store makes for a third King Soopers in like a 1-2 mile radius. Super Target and a Safeway are also near the Leetsdale and Cherry site, so it's surprising that the neighborhood can apparently support three King Soopers stores in such close proximity, since the one on Colorado Blvd isn't slated to close, as far as I know, even though it's probably the smallest of the three.
