OK, presumably this topic hasn't been discussed before. We are a couple in our 30s w/small children, currently live in the Midwest and like it, but our jobs allow us to move anywhere and we've narrowed it down to these two places, based on what we're looking for: outdoor lifestyle/recreation, culture, reasonable cost of living.

Any thoughts or insights??

When it comes to outdoor lifestyle/recreation, Denver wins hands down. As for culture, I'd guess that Denver would have more (not too sure though). Cost of living however, goes to Madison. According to Salary.com, Madison is 8.7% lower in overall cost of living than Denver. Also Madison employers typically pay 3.7% less than those in Denver. If it were up to me, I’d take the slightly more expensive option and move to Denver.

Wouldn't Madison be more directly comparable to Boulder (in size and feel) as opposed to a larger city like Denver? Both Boulder and Madison are home to large, well-respected public universities, have reputations for being refuges for political liberalism, are similarly sized, and are widely recognized for quality of life.

Madison is more of an independent city than Boulder, IMO. Boulder is, in addition to the home of CU and the federal labs, a suburb of Denver. A lot of Boulderites work in Denver and commute there daily. Madison is also the state capital of Wisconsin and has lots of state jobs. The only state jobs in Boulder are at the University.
