I guess there's just not a lot of competition in DSM. I'm flying in tomorrow from Baltimore and it wasn't too bad. I think I paid around $330. I looked into a flight for January from DSM to Miami and it was well over $500. Perhaps it's just too early to look for that flight.
I can tell you from experience that Miami is always pretty pricey to fly into. Like Des Moines, Miami does not have a lot of low cost carriers coming in to make the traditional competitors bring down their prices. On the other hand, Fort Lauderdale does. So if you are flexible, try flying into FLL instead.

It is a bit too early though to book for January 2012. Just curious, are you going on a cruise out of Miami? If so, most cruise lines will transfer you from Miami or Fort Lauderdale airports to their ships. The Fort Lauderdale transfers cost more, but the airfare difference would likely more than offset that.

I expect to pay about $300-$350 round trip for domestic trips out of DSM and roughly $1000 for international.

That would be better than most of what I get out of Cedar Rapids and at least as good or better than what I usually get out of Moline.

You might try AirTran, Allegiant, Frontier. They are the discount carriers that fly to DSM.
