DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A young pig has won a reprieve from the frying pan just as Iowa's popular bacon festival is about to begin.

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad pardoned the 30-pound, 2 ½-month-old Berkshire pig named Bonnie on Friday morning.

Yeah, the governor has nothing more important to do.

Another example of the cheesy culture you can't avoid in Iowa, it's like a nonstop Menards commercial.

"Popular" Bacon Festival? Popular must be considered a relative term here. I've lived in Iowa 8 years and just across the rive my entire life before that and I've never heard of this event.

I really hate it when our usually great state does things that make it look like Ronnie has a valid point.

It is only 3 - 4 yrs old.

It started in a bar (El Bait Shop). Each year has moved to a bigger venue due to demand. It is now held at the fairgrounds.

8,000 tix went on sale and were sold out in less than 3 minutes.

It is popular. No doubt about it. So much so, the organizers are now taking the event to other states.

Well, that explains why I've never heard of it.

So you're saying that other states are wanting to emulate Iowa? Wonder what RJ thinks of that?

^^RJ doesn't live here anymore, so I can't imagine he has an opinion on this.

FWIW...Article on Huffington Post today regarding this event:

Quote:
Festival co-founder Brooks Reynolds, who officially started the event just a few years ago, said it's become the largest bacon showcase in the world.

Yet, Subway mentions "Iowa" sarcastically in a commercial and it has to be removed. An article written by US News & World Report strictly to provide vaudeville to the rest of the country & world is somehow lauded of course.

By the way, bacon's popularity is NOT an Iowa thing. It's everywhere.

Hey, Ronnie, how's that new home goin'? Been whinging in other forums lately, or do you just have that feather up yer rear about Iowa that you can't let go of.

Go away. You give nothing of value here except comic relief. Wait... On the other hand stay.
