This isn't the "historical society" it is the Iowa State Historical Building. The replacement display is something to do with the history of RAGBRAI and will correspond with RAGBRAI coming through DM for the first time in 21 years.

This is one of those dumb Des Moines things like Tasty Tacos that only people who have lived in Des Moines their whole life think is important at all. It's cute nostalgia, but that's about it. There are more pressing issues with the current state of the Historical Building than this one display.

Short answer, yes. The last of us to have experienced Floppy as kids are still only in our 30s, after all!

I personally think he should stay at the State Historical Building after being refurbished, as even a lot of us who grew up outside Des Moines enjoyed him. Aside from the TV show and state fair appearances, Duane and Floppy visited a lot of towns outside the Des Moines area as well for county fairs and the like. I remember going to see him at the Grundy county fair (I think) when I was maybe 5 or 6 years old and being disappointed that I couldn't catch more than a glimpse through the crush of people, even with my mom carrying me on her back (she's not a tall woman but damned if she didn't do what she could).

That having been said, keeping him at WHO would still be much better than in some underground vault or whatever at the ISHB.

I just hope that one day this IPTV icon will be stuffed and put on display in the State Historical Building:

Tasty Tacos is okay. The fact Des Moines people rave about them shows just how small their "travel circle" outside of Iowa really is. If Tasty Tacos was based on Ottumwa, I doubt their enthusiasm level would be quite as high.
