Past history on this forum is there are not a lot of regulars out here that have a good feel for Des Moines rental market. Not sure if you'll get any responses. I can tell you there really is no unsafe place I'm aware of in West Des Moines.

A lady I work with is moving back to the Des Moines area to be closer to her kids. She's been looking for a place to rent in that range for a couple of months and finally found one for $600 or $650, but it's in Madrid which is probably 20-25 miles north of WDM. I'm guessing you'll have to raise your budget a little to live in West Des Moines.

I doubt you will find under $600 in most of the metro, but this is a large apartment commmunity that has pretty reasonable prices for the area. They are in West Des Moines

Good Luck finding apartments under $600 in WDM. Try the southside or low income housing elsewhere. Typical apartment around WDM is $800-900 for a 1bedroom. I personally live and Turtle Creek and its way too expensive.
