This is straying pretty far off the thread topic, and would probably be better suited to play out in a thread in a different area of the forum before it gets shut down.
Elsewhere on the forum there are many controversial topic threads to be found such as this amongst a huge variety of red meat subjects.

Poor people can improve their lot in life - if they have the drive to even go to a two-year school and learn an honest skill, then it can be done.
This is essentially what I'm saying.
Also, you want to see legitimate, venomous hatred towards low class ghetto blacks, I'd suggest visiting Chatham, a middle class black neighborhood that had its quality of life decimated once the CHA high rises were torn down and the 'residents' spread through out the city on Section 8 vouchers. A lot of them wound up in Chatham- a black and formerly safe neighborhood- and completely destroyed it. The opinion expressed by the long time Black residents of Chatham about the Section 8 black residents of Chatham would probably make steel03's head completely explode.

The race component is very real, but the main issue is socioeconomic status.

Whenever someone broaches this topic, they're immediately met with a wall of psuedo-academic BS by ideologues crowing about 'oppression'.

Anyway, I agree with everyone else, this is about Des Moines in general, not about specific race issues, so probably best to get it back on topic.

Des Moines is mostly white because it has an abundance of "white people" jobs where you sit in a cubicle all day and confiscate other people's money via complicated financial apparatuses: Insurance. It's very fitting that Des Moines' economy is built on such an industry.

Just like the insurance industry takes much more than it gives back, so does Des Moines. The mentality of taking from others just because you can is the hallmark of white culture. And there's no better showcase for the white American corporate thug mentality than Des Moines.

You should be welcomed to Des Moines with a great big apology about how oppressed you've been!

You're totally right though. Where there are 'black people jobs', prosperity and security abounds! Des Moines would be blessed if you and your whole family moved in so they could take pride in their 'diversity'

Hey guys, lets steer the conversation back to the original topic, please. Race is a touchy subject and I don't like where this is going.

Thanks!

They have races in Des Moines? I thought you had to go to Newton for that.

Home building & multi-family building permits as well as job growth would seem to indicate that the metro area is still growing at a very healthy clip.
As the op wrote more recently, "boom town" may not be the proper terminology but nevertheless the area is one of the brightest spots in the midwest & also ranks very well nationally in terms of growth. Actually there are a lot of sun belt cities that lag behind the economic & population performance of metro Des Moines.

It's really one of the great mysteries (like the pyramids) - why hasn't most of the world tried to move to Des Moines yet?

LOL! & yes.
But both of them are 2 of the upper & west central midwestern brighter points or success stories that belie the notion that the midwest is dying off or only full of rust belt cities or boring-as-heck places.
As for example, a lot of people down here in the southeast don't know diddly about the midwest & think that it's just a flat place place full of Detroits, & Flints, etc.
