Can HR at the new company help him out? That would be my starting point.

Urbandale isn't a college area, so finding a room in a house or a roommate situation is going to be difficult, plus it's a fairly expensive area. He might have to get a room at an extended stay motel at the beginning. That will help him decide where to live.

Depending on where in Urbandale he's working, the commute could either be easy or a nightmare. If he works on the north end, he might want to look into apartments in Johnston, and there are new, affordable units being built.

If he's looking for something cheaper, there's a couple apartment complexes on Dennis Dr. kind of behind El Rodeo Mexican restaurant (so south of Douglas, west of 75th). I know I lived in one during law school, and some classmates of mine lived in the other company's units kitty corner across the street. They weren't anything fancy, but they were quite and we were able to attend to our studies.
