I am considering taking another position that would relocate me back in Iowa. Even though I have lived in Iowa in the past, I am wondering the pros of cons of living in Ankeny or Grimes? I driven through them both years ago, but haven't ever spent any time in either place. I do have middle school age kids, so good schools are very important.

I'm not at all an expert on the area so I'll mention what you probably already know -- Grimes seems to be poised for a lot of growth in the future, whereas Ankeny has been experiencing explosive growth for some time now. If you work on the west side of the metro, Grimes will offer better commute routes, but Ankeny wouldn't be terrible either, except in the worst part of winter. DC-Grimes is the smaller district but I don't know of any substantial differences in curriculum or student population other than sheer size between the two districts. Someone else might be able to speak to that. And regardless of where your home is, you can always open enroll to another district that you might end up preferring (I love that about Iowa!).

Ankeny is getting through the roof expensive. Grimes is going up, too. I'd live in Polk City and commute.

Granger might be an option too, if you're looking northward.

Per Zillow, the median house value of homes currently listed in Ankeny is about $255K, while Polk City's is about $275K.

If you really want to save some money, Huxley's is about $210K and Madrid's is about $165K.

Polk City has a fair amount of new construction, and a smaller existing home stock that makes those numbers rise more than they probably should.
