...and I couldn't be any happier!

My birthday is 2 days later and I'd love to go out for a nice dinner with my adult children. I prefer local to a chain (I've read that thread!!) but Flemings would be an exception. Good wine is a must.

I am open to any kind of food except sushi. List them all.

Thank you in advance. See you soon!

Bistro Montage (bistromontage.com), hands down. Fabulous food (the cassoulet is out of this world), good atmosphere, nice wine list, and great staff. If you engage the staff in a conversation about wine, you might just end up with a free glass of dessert wine at the end of the meal as we did. :-)

If you want something more trendy, Trostel's Dish in Clive (dishtrostels.com) offers a good tapas experience with wine flights available. Wine list is pretty extensive (or it was when we were there before we moved to Vermont 2 years ago).

Can be more specific on what you might enjoy? Would you like something urban/downtown? Quiet and cozy? A neighborhood place? Latest and greatest? Italian, seafood, steaks, BBQ? I can tell you we have plenty of great local restaurants so there is zero need to settle for a chain....although I hear nothing but good things about Flemings.

Without hearing any specifics, I'll throw out Centro and Django two of my favs and recently voted #1 and #3 respectively on the Des Moines Registers 100 Best restaurants in Central Iowa.

Thanks y'all. I've been so busy packing and such I just got back on here. I will give these names to my kids and see what they want. I'm really up for anything right now...just being there w/ my kids, new grandson in DM...well, I can't ask for anything else right now. =)
Maybe later I'll ask about quiet and cozy...and warm. ;-)

Bistro Montage and Django are good choices and I still haven't made it out to Centro but I'm sure that's nice.

My favorites are Baratta's and Tumea's. Both Italian (duh) and have good wine selections... or at least I think they do. I don't drink so I'm not sure.

Gino's has good steaks and the local specialty steak deburgo. The house creamy garlic dressing is amazing. I've never been to Fleming's but Johnny's south of the Airport on Fleur is a small chain (same people who own the Machine Shed) that's worth an occasional visit.

Remember that lady that came here a few months ago and asked about restaurants, specifically local ones, got a ton of good responses and then came back a week later and said she ate at a TGIFriday's in Ankeny instead? Good times on City-Data, my friends.

ahhh....yes. Fond memories!

It must have been Applebees or Chile's as there is no TGIFriday's in Ankeny. Is there?

I ate at Yanni's once and "ok" is a fair assessment. I guess they got into some hot water a few months ago over some employee's immigration status.
