I'm surprised Clinton Township isn't on this list. In 2000, it was about 5% African American, now, when I visit family there, I noticed it appears to be 35%-40% African American.

Their Census data will be interesting. I've really noticed this, especially in NW Clinton, but definitely townshipwide the past year or two. 35-40 is high, though, except in apartments and in the Quinn Road area.

I don't know, it seems most of the township south of 16 Mile is majority black, not just around Quinn. Also, the area around Joy Road (Which, despite popular belief, is Clinton Township, NOT Mount Clemens), and, the area immediately south of Mount Clemens, off NB Gratiot has also diversified lately.

The apartments between Harper and 94, either side of 16 Mile, may be majority black or close to it. Rents are comparatively cheap and the schools are better than Roseville, Clintondale, or East Detroit. Detached houses, however, not even close, except in the Quinn area. NW Clinton in particular does seem more diverse than it did, I don't spend much time there anymore but my friends still there have made mention of it, lots more blacks and eastern European immigrants. When I worked fast food as a teenager on Garfield we might wait on five black customers a week (a manager of mine actually denied one service once) and we seldom had black employees (many of them came from Detroit, but one teenage co-worker lived in the $1000 a month apartments at 19 and Romeo Plank), but the workforce is much more diverse now.

When you say NW Clinton, do you mean by the Partridge Creek mall?

Yeah, north of 16, south of Hall, between Hayes and probably the intersection of Cass and Clinton River. There's some huge apartment complexes that aren't all that nice (Carlyle Place on 19 Mile where a friend of mine completely ruined a unit once, and a co-worker when I delivered pizzas nearly got robbed ten years ago, Garfield Plaza, another complex on Kingsbrook whose name I can't remember, Riverside Village...a dump at 19 and Romeo Plank, and a real hole on Canal called Green Valley, where all the Romanian immigrants I worked with lived). Nearly the entire area is in the Chippewa Valley district, a little on the south edge is in Fraser Schools.

Damn those secretaries! How many times do I have to tell them to proofread their work? () Here's the corrected list. I've also included the percentages (white/black/other) for those cities that are less than 94% white. I intend to create another list using 2010 numbers and compare the changes.

For reference: Tri-county percentages: 68.7% white / 25.1% black / 6.2% other

If Detroit metro is anything like Chicago metro, then some of these suburbs with black and white diversity are only temporary. Isn't Southfield losing its white pop.? I have a few cousins living in Southfield and the suburb is near 2/3rds black and the local high school is over 95% black.

Southfield has pretty much lost its white population. Much of the remaining white population is Jewish and I think they might send their children to private schools. Some of the areas on the list are definitely in white flight, such as Eastpointe and Redford Township, but a number of these areas have historically had a black population either living off in a corner of the municipality (Clinton Township) or have a history of the races living together for a long time (Romulus, Mount Clemens, New Haven). I don't have a great familiarity with Romulus (the airport is there but not much else) but I lived in northwestern Clinton Township for about ten years. That area is more diverse (especially the apartments) but is not having much in the way of white flight issues. Mount Clemens is a small, old city that is still kind of segregated almost block by block. I think the racists in metro Detroit are realizing that they can't really run away anymore without going out 30 miles and having an hour commute to work.

I do agree with you on the Southfield flight issue, but there are cities in metro Detroit where they are truly becoming diverse. The proof is that whites, blacks, and asians are moving into these cities all at once. Some cities that come to mind are Novi, Troy, Canton, and possibly Farmington Hills.

Back in the 1980's, everyone thought that Southfield was going to be the diverse suburb of the metro area, but as you pointed out, it has become a black majority over the years, especially the school district. At one time (1970's-80's) Southfield was very diverse. It was home to Jews, Armenians, Russians, African-American's, and many different Asian groups. Many of the Armenians, Jews, and Asians have slowly moved to the suburbs north and west of Southfield.

I also remember when Oak Park was known as the diverse suburb back in the 80's, it has also become an African-American majority.

It would be nice to see suburbs like Novi, Troy, Canton, etc stay diversified and not see the white flight which took place in Southfield and Oak Park.

As it was mentioned in another post, how long of a commute are people willing to do just to live in a segregated white city/township/neighborhood?
