Hi what's up. I'm Tommy I'm Italian/Polish - American, I will be 23 in April and I'm from Detroit. Originally from the area by 7 mile and Conant but then in 2005 someone broke in when I was away for the weekend with my friend from school and his family in petoskey but just my mom and little sisters were home so we got really scared of the area and we moved to the west/south west side just south of vernor high way and a block from the woodmere cemetery which was a really good area and really mixed kind of people. In 08 me snd my mom and little sisters moved to where we are now in Reno cause that's where my grandmother and my auntie live. I Hate Nevada and wanna go back to Michigan and since I'm almost done with my associates degree i wanna fry and transfer to Wayne State and maybe move back to my old area on the sw if it's still ok

I just wanted do know what my neighborhoods look like these days because I have heard that a lot of the areas have changed a lot

Oh and since this is a forum for people moving to detroit I just wanted to warn ya that if you're white and have kids only live in Detroit city if you can drive them to the suburbs for school choice or lay down the cash for catholic school because I went to school mostly in Dearborn until my mom lost her job and got a crappier position in the morning so she couldn't afford gas and wasn't around to drive me to the suburbs in the morning so I had to go to Southwestern HS (which I heard closed) for 9th grade and it was really really dangerous and I had to stop going after like 8 weeks cause I was getting robbed everyday so instead I had wake up really early and ride the bus and my bike in between gaps to get to school in Redford

Sorry that's off topic but how are the areas doing these days?

I will just say that is an interesting story. You don't meet to many people like yourself; that is for sure. Were there any other white kids at Southwestern then?

Can I ask you why your family chose to stay when nearly everyone else had left?

Sorry I can't help you out with the area update.

Tommy, do you still have close family and friends here? It might be upsetting to be so far from your family. What do you dislike about Nevada? How do you envision you life as being better here? The thing is, you want to be realistic about how this might or might not make life better for you. Very best wishes to you for your future.

The Southwest area you're talking about is probably the same as you left. Just with more vacant lots

Money. City is cheaper. There were other white folks in southwest in same predicament..other poor white people lol.

And at southwestern there were like 10 white kids and 20 Arabs, the rest were black and Mexican

Interesting. I would imagine that you would find your neighborhood less populated overall and significantly less white too. Even in the areas that had a significant white population, and by that I mean maybe 20 percent, it fell proportionately from 2000-2010 quite a bit, depending on the neighborhood from, just off the top of my head, about 25-40 percent. Of course those numbers also count Arabs as white.

You can find out exactly by googling the SEMCOG numbers. The last census was in 2010 but I don't see any reason to think that trend would have changed.

I'm sure others have noticed this, but I find southwest Detroit hasn't declined as bad as the eastside/westside (minus Delray). There was definitely population loss since the recession but you would be surprised at how few vacant lots there are. As for 7 mile and conant the area is in ruins, and I'm sure the op knows this as it wasn't doing well in 05 either. The only thing left there is the coney island.

It also seems like the city does a better job of demolishing burnt out houses in the southwest. Probably due to the relative lower number of them compared to other areas.

Didn't you mean to ask: "when nearly EVERY WHITE PERSON had left?"?

Mexicans and blacks ain't left southwest and have been around for decades

Western International High School Demographics - Detroit Public Schools

Question to the Opening Poster: Why were you getting robbed at Southwestern High School? Did the black students think just because you were white that you had money? I'm sorry you had such as terrible experience. Southwestern and Chadsey have closed, so the only southwest Detroit high school left is Western, and it is mostly Latino.

To your question, your neighborhood probably hasn't changed much, there might be a few more Arabs living there which has happened to the part of Warrendale that is next to Dearborn.

Yes, that is what I meant, but I meant Detroit in general.
