And even if Detroit wasn't a dangerous city you would still be scared to go there because it's a predominately black city.

You can try to bait me into an argument about race, but I won't play.

I am good at what I do. I have a right to be safe while I am working. I did not create the crime that makes Detroit and other large cities dangerous and I will not willingly be the victim of it.

Good night.

Fair point, but to an outsider who has no other info to go on, seeing a photo of a street like this with immaculate homes and well manicured laws, they could be forgiven for thinking it's a decent area.

Eh, Southfield is overwhelmingly black, and I doubt too many folks, even racist folks, are scared of visiting Southfield.

The problem in Detroit is the ignorance. Skin color is largely irrelevent.

Thank you, that's exactly how I feel too.

I have been in many predominately black areas with my job. I have met wonderful black people who I would trust with my life. I have also met white people who were indolent, dirty, and just plain scary whose neighborhoods I wouldn't want to walk in during the day...and vice versa. If there's one thing I can say with certainty that I know from doing this job, it is that you can't judge someone by the color of their skin.

My original question had to do with the fact that I am largely unfamiliar with the city of Detroit, a city that, unfortunately, has a reputation for tremendously high crime, something that I have no control over and didn't cause. Someone in my line of work was murdered senselessly there earlier this year just because she was trying to help someone. Anyone in my shoes would be at least somewhat apprehensive under those circumstances, wouldn't they? I have a family who loves and needs me. I am not going to willingly set myself up to be a victim and be taken from them just because someone, whether they are white, black, or purple, wants my car or the small amount of cash that I carry on my person when I am working. Does that make me a racist?

Thanks for the map, it's very helpful!

So...it appears that this particular neighborhood had, in a span of about two days:

3 armed robberies
1 felonious assault
1 larceny
1 arson
1 home invasion

Anyone here who WOULDN'T be concerned about being an unarmed woman with a decent car going into this area alone at night?

So what are you going to do? Tell your boss you don't feel comfortable going into that neighborhood or are you going to arm yourself and do your job?

Our boss has stressed to all of us from the beginning that if we don't feel safe, DON'T GO. There are other avenues for people to receive care if they live in an area that is unsafe for visiting healthcare professionals to go into, it happens all the time all over the country. No job is worth risking your life for. As far as arming myself--I would rather prevent the incident from happening in the first place than feel that I have to arm myself and potentially injure or kill someone, so that's not happening.

Again, I have a right to be safe when I am working, and again, it has nothing to do with race. If someone is carjacking me, the last thing I care about is what color he or she is.

Except I never said it was a decent area.

What the hell is with the reading comprehension on this forum?
