Oh. Wait, wait, wait... I thought Oakland County was the land of plenty with a AAA bond rating? I could'a swore Oakland County was THE wealthiest county in the United States of America a few years ago. Isn't Troy, MI one of the most well-off communities in the free world? Isn't Troy home to Somerset mall, the most luxurious shopping center in the State of Michigan? Isn't Troy comprised thousands of 3,500 square foot brick homes with huge yards built during the past 10 years?

Wait. What's that you say? Troy's residents won't support a library because it will cost a few dollars a year per person? It's okay, I'm sure they can use one of Detroit's umpteen libraries instead. I'm so glad my city income tax money can pay for Troy residents to use the books, movies, and recordings that I paid for. Enjoy, you jerk-offs.

This is one of the interesting things about the U.S.

You can send a gazillion gazillion gazillion dollars into foreign countries for everything imagineable - building military bases, building embassies, patrolling foreign countries, moving around massive supplies between foreign countries (military based), buying and creating expensive weaponry, training soldiers everyday, policing foreign nationals, building them orphanages and such, etc.

But God Forbid we have to have domestic amenities like libraries and librarians in our country eating up tax dollars. Fine if we do it abroad, but domestically, NO THANKS!

Just one of the many many many reasons the U.S. is quickly reverting to having much less than most 3rd world countries have.

Not all of Troy is expensive. The southeast corner with Warren Con Schools and the part just north of Royal Oak with R.O. schools are priced accordingly.

That's not really Troy.

As a homeowner in Troy, this is sad to hear. My family has spent quite a bit of time there and really got a lot of use out of it. I always thought of Troy as a great place to raise a family, but this doesn't confirm that. The ballot was a bit confusing - people were supposed to vote No on 3 of the issues that appear to be about the library, but vote Yes for a fourth one?

I haven't been there in about a year, but I highly doubt Troy is as bad as what pifler is saying. At least in the northern part of Troy. But when I left there were entire shopping centers on Rochester road and Crooks that were vacant. It was very sad.

First of all, I've met lots of Oakland County residents who use Detroit Public Libraries all the time.

Second of all, nobody in Oakland County pays anything for me. I could afford to live anywhere in Oakland County if I wanted to, but doubt I ever will.

Douche-troit. Does any other CD forum have as many threads closed down as this one? This one is well on its way to being put out of its misery. Kinda funny how a thread about a library of all things devolved and likely will be shut down. My gosh, the voters in Troy have spoken, and they don't want to pay a library tax, it seems. Sad but true, but I would have voted the same way, and probably a few of you on here would have as well.

This forum is just like the real Detroit area- closed down because nobody can get along.

Despite numerous attempts at derailing this thread, I'm not going to close it. Instead, I'll be handing out infractions for off topic posts.
So please, get back on topic.
Yac.

Who gives a crap?

Troy doesn't want to raise their taxes to pay for a library. I don't blame them. I would have voted no too.

Lavishing millions on a library isn't a basic necessity, and the taxpayers spend more than enough to keep the library open already.

In Detroit, most folks don't pay property taxes, so they always vote yes on these types of proposals. It's easy to say yes when other folks are paying for it.

Bloomfield Hills, like Troy, voted against raising taxes for library service. Democracy in action, and probably a good idea considering the economy and the fact that a library is a nonessential service.
