This year at midnight, the 1st annual NYE dropping of the Detroit "D" will take place in Campus Martius. The Compuware Building and Hard Rock Cafe Detroit are hosting a big party that goes from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM. Tickets are on salfe for $85.00. I hope that this can become a new Detroit tradition, like the lighting of the Christmas tree last week. Unless I get dragged to another city this NYE, I'm definitely going to be at this event.

$85?

I wouldn't expect a big turnout...but at least they'll keep out the riffraff.

Actually, $85 is pretty much on par with other big events around town. The Detroit Princess Riverboat NYE Party is $75.00, and tickets to the party at State Theater are $65.00. Plus, at this event you get two live performances, all-night appetizers, and a 5-hour open bar. You could easily spend that much if you purchased all those things independently. Also, I don't think you need to buy tickets to watch the D fall in Campus Martius, just walk over. I think this event has the potential to draw a lot people from outside the region. Many people head to cities to celebrate NYE, and now downtown Detroit will have a stoplight event.

Theyre going to literally drop a "D"? You realize this visual will open us up to more derisive jokes!

Default UPDATE: 2011 NYE Ball Drop Downtown Detroit

From Freep:

"Producers behind the inaugural edition of the Drop, a downtown New Year's Eve party, are finalizing details as the countdown -- make that dropdown -- to 2011 ticks closer. The event will include a neon Old English D descending into the heart of the city -- outside the Compuware building at to Campus Martius. Event cofounder Jerrid Mooney said that momentum is building for the party, for which revelers will gather in the Compuware atrium, the Hard Rock Café and around an outdoor main stage, where DJs A.D. Cruze and DJ Tom T will spin."

"Spotlights will beam across the the 50-pound, 6-foot-by-4-foot D hanging 60 feet above the stage as it begins its descent at the 10-second mark. At midnight, an explosion of sound and light will fire off as the crowd is led in 'Auld Lang Syne.' Organizers expect the D drop to be visible to people who are in the area but not attending the party. The ice-skating rink at Campus Martius will be open until after midnight to coincide with the drop, according to Campus Martius officials."

It won't be televised? Seems to me that would help its cause. Even West Michigan viewers would like to see it since the local media quite often promotes Detroit and its events.

Sounds like a definite must miss to me. If nobody gets shot I'll be surprised. Why would anyone deliberately put their self in harm's way by going to an event where violence is more or less guaranteed? A public booze party downtown = bad idea.

I am so glad you won't be there. That alone makes my evening.

Have a great new year, edub.
