DETROIT'S EASTSIDE
  • Conner Creek Greenway is a plan to build a 9-mile walking/cycling path through the entire length of the city on Detroit's Eastside. The path will run in an old creekbed from 8 Mile Road all the way to the Detroit River. On April 29th, a new 2 mile stretch will open up, adding to the 4.5 miles built since 2006.
The Conner Creek Greenway is one of several interconnected paths in the City of Detroit, including the the Dequindre Cut, the Midtown Loop, the Southwest Greenway, and the Detroit Riverwalk. Overall, Detroit will have a total network of 23 miles of paved paths across the city, not including city parks, such as Belle Isle.

These paths give every Detroiter access to the Detroit River and its natural beauty. They allow people to be connected, get exercise, enjoy nature, and navigate the city easily by foot or by bike without spending money on gas.

Default Sachse Construction to Open Office in Guardian Bldg

DOWNTOWN
  • Sachse Construction firm of Birmingham will open a new office downtown in the Guardian Building. The firm has been involved in several construction and renovation projects in Detroit and believes that having a downtown office will make them more efficient.
Hopefully, the stream of ongoing projects in the city will keep Sachse busy enough to justify making downtown their permanent home. There's lots of construction work to be done in Detroit building the city back from the ground up.

  • In other news, the mass migration of workers from BCBS and Quicken to downtown Detroit will finally begin in May. The total number after the moves will be ~5,000 new downtown workers, which will lead to a noticeable increase in downtown street life and vibrancy, and hopefully a spike in new downtown residents.

Default An Apple Store in Detroit? Just maybe...

DOWNTOWN
  • An Apple store in Detroit...?! Quicken CEO Dan Gilbert has been making big moves in downtown Detroit, snatching up properties and renovating office space. His recent big move was purchasing Chase Tower on Campus Martius Park, which will house his company's new headquarters. In a recent interview with Channel 7 News, Gilbert discussed the possibility of bringing Apple to downtown Detroit. He stated that he is in talks with Apple about putting a store in Chase Tower, or in the building he owns around the corner. Obviously, an Apple store coming to Detroit would send a message that the Detroit's central business district is on the rise.
Is there an Apple Store in the future for downtown Detroit
  • In other Campus Martius news, the Brazilian Steakhouse in the Compuware Building is making strides towards opening soon. As of this week, they have new signage out front along Woodward Ave, including a large billboard. Looks great!

CORKTOWN
  • Slow's announced today a long-awaited and much-needed expansion to its popular Corktown BBQ restaurant. Owned by young Detroit icon, Phil Cooley, the expansion of Slow's is only one of many projects Cooley seems to be involved in, including a new Coffee House, also opening soon in Corktown. Slow's also recently opened its second location, "Slow's To Go" in Midtown. A great addition to the city and a welcomed expansion to the original location!

Default Skybar and Lounge Opening in David Stott Tower

DOWNTOWN
  • You may have been wondering about the large neon blue martini glasses at the top of Stott Tower recently (well, at least I was) and now we have an answer. A chic new nightclub and lounge will occupy the basement and first floor Stott Tower, now owned by Luke Investments. The nightclub is the concept of entrepreneur Mike Carney, who is also responsible for Groove Lounge in Southfield, which attracts an upscale crowd.
Construction on "Skybar Lounge" is fully complete, and it is expected to open this month when its liquor license is approved. The bar will offer fine wines, martinis, and tapas food, and cater to downtown's business professionals. Carney also stated that there are plans to develop the top floors of Stott Tower into a private club. This development could be a critical step in the revitalization of Stott Tower and Capitol Park, which was redeveloped last year. The area is prime for bars, restaurants, lofts and the like, and is one of the most interesting corners of the city.

  • Also, a new convenience store has opened downtown on lower Woodward at John R. Called "Jazz," the store has your usual 7-11 type items and then some. Little stores like this add to the street-scape, provide an additional convenience to residents, and light up a another storefront. As small as it may be, lower Woodward is starting to fill in one window at a time.

Default Detroit Institute of Bagels Opens in Corktown

CORKTOWN
  • A new bagel company has opened up in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood. Two brothers, and graduates of UofM, have started "Detroit Institute of Bagels" in their Corktown flat. This is great news considering bagels are one the city's lacking food items. Right now, custom bagel orders can be placed online at their website and either delivered to you or picked up on location.
The bagel brothers have plans to open a brick 'n mortar bagel shop sometime within the next year and hope to partner with a friend and a New York City expatriate who will supplement their business with a coffeehouse. According to Nathan Skid of Crain's Detroit, the young entrepreneurs are looking for space in Midtown.

Default Skidmore Studio Moving to Downtown's Madison Building

DOWNTOWN
  • Skidmore Studio, an advertising firm founded in Detroit in 1959, is returning to the city. The firm is moving downtown to the historic Madison Building at Woodward and Broadway this September. The Madison Building is one of a number of downtown properties recently purchased by Quicken Loans CEO, Dan Gilbert.
In a statement to Crain's, Skidmore stated that it wanted to return to its roots and that the firm is excited about being back in the city and being a part of Detroit's resurgence. Skidmore will be the Madison building's first new tenant, but certainly will not be the last.

In the past few months, there has been a steady stream of new business emerging in Detroit, and an equal number of businesses returning to downtown's central business district. The correlating effect has been the creation of spin-off businesses, such as new restaurants and service providers. At the same time, rental rates have continued to climb near Detroit's core with many promising new developments on the horizon. Truly an exciting time to be in Detroit!

  • Texas de Brazil, a Brazilian steakhouse, will open this June in the Compuware Building off Campus Martius Park downtown. The restaurant is known as a "Churrascaria" for its type and style of food, and will cater to a trendy dining crowd.
Construction on the new restaurant has been going on for quite some time, but is now finished. Texas de Brazil will add even more diversity to Detroit's already fantastic dining options. The new location will be 7,000 sq. ft. and will employ an expected 50 people.
