You should take the job in Detroit and be apart of the rebirth.
I am totally with you. I remember LES from my high school days in the 90s and it was already hot property then. After a year or so working in Detroit I may have the confidence to buy in the immediate outer neighborhoods of downtown perhaps in 2012 if I see the revival gathering momentum.

If you want to spend time in the City, or live there, it will probably be different than what you are used to. There is a level of risk for theft or even violence, but it is less than most people will make it out to be (EXCEPT IN SOME AREAS AT SOME TIMES). There are not a lot of amenities in the City such as shopping, but there are some restaurants worth visiting. You will be frustrated seeing things that could be done much better than they are being done. If you do not have a strong desire to live in the City, you probably should look at the suburbs for a place to live.

Should you take a job in Detroit? You can pretty much find any living situation you might want, so it comes down to job related questions, is the pay good and is it what you want to do?
Thanks for the great post skyl4rk. I have decided to take the job and after much research and asking around have concluded that renting in Ferndale and commuting to the city will work for the first year anyway. Downtown Detroit has an amazing amount of parking space compared to other cities.

Just lettin' you know, that Southfield isn't a Jewish community anymore. It's about 55-60% black.

I like the Ferndale idea, it's a nice straight shot to downtown as well as a gateway to points north.

What a trove of treasure! Thanks once again for this collection. This will be extremely useful for me...I am checking some of the links out already. Would you know what the average monthly electric/gas and heating bills are in the Detroit metro area for a 2 BR apartment? Also on average what the monthly car insurance would be for a 31+ single male.

Thanks again, detwahDJ. You are quite the life saver. I have one last question: Do you know if there are any good gyms or fitness clubs in downtown Detroit. I have researched all over (including threads here) but the only gym I can come up with is the Detroit Athletic Club which sounds very expensive and requires about 15 members to endorse you. Again, I really appreciate all the information you are providing.

The DAC has always been exclusively for local movers and shakers - but please note my knowledge of present-day Detroit is limited. I have been away for the last 10 years although I've kept in touch with family in the area. Much has happened over time, a lot for the better.
See the suggestions in my previous post. A few of the forum contributors actually live downtown and have more current info.
FYI I was born & raised there - lived in N.E., N.W., Hamtramck, and S.W. but never downtown.
I would suppose there are some fitness places in the GM bldg, hotels, casinos, but Im speculating.

These I just googled along with the Marriott which claim to have fitness centers. Open to the public? I haven't a clue. Others will know.

Ferndale is a hip town, I'm sure you'll really like it. It has a young, progressive vibe and is close to Detroit. Some great bars around there too... As far as downtown goes, it's a pretty elite group. There's under 10,000 people who live in the central business district, and somewhere between 75-100k in greater downtown. The population makeup is pretty diverse. You have starving artists living on the same block as the quarterback for the Detroit Lions. There's a lot of local flavor, as well as a healthy sample Detroit's upper-crust, i.e. doctors, lawyers, judges, journalists, radio personalities, business executives, the guy that designs race cars for Ford, and everyone in between. If you're working for one of the finance firms downtown, you'll probably have co-workers that live in the city, check out their pads and see what you think. In terms of athletic centers, look into Boll Family YMCA located at Broadway and John R. It opened a few years ago and is immaculate. Before I moved downtown I inquired into getting a membership there. It was around $45/mo for me (male <30/yrs old). However, if you decide to eventually move downtown, you probably won't need a gym membership. Most buildings have full gyms, pools, and locker rooms. My building has a first-rate workout facility that is included in my base rent. In any event, welcome to Metro Detroit!
