When I say relatively safe, I'm from NYC though I haven't lived there in 22 years. Am now in Miami. So what I mean is a place where yeah you need to keep your door locked, but no break ins & yeah you might not want to walk around alone at the wee hours, but basically you won't get mugged or worse at "nomal hours", say up til 11pm/12/1am! Obviously if there's a walkable area where it's even better than realatively safe, do tell!
I know Oakland & Macomb are safer, but I don't assume you can walk around there.
And I guess unless I lived in Auburn Hills I'd have to drive to The Palace, huh? I'd appreciate all details.
I seriosly believe I was from Detroit in another life. I'm the Number One PISTONS fan (which sucks being in Miami GRRRR ) and have been since 88! And I used to be a serious Met fan & even though they have a good chance this year, I have this deep down desire to see the Tigers win it all! I have never been to Detroit but I feel I must one day because it's really strange the affinity I feel for it! Freaks everyone I know out! I even drive a Ford (94 Escort Wagon - love that car!) & always defend them!
Also are there areas where you can rent or buy small houses in the same type area-walkable, not downtown & not break-in/mugger etc land? Thank you! GO PISTONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just read the other post, which directed me here.
Just know what anywhere North of 8 mile is basically OK. In that regard, the movie was accurate. Also, the Western suburbs of Wayne Co. (my stomping groud), are fine and only sketchy in certain areas. I grew up in Wayne/Westland. Livonia is still very nice as well as Plymouth. Plymouth is really become a little artistic haven, with a beautiful town square. Almost a village green. Of course there has been lots of new development in Canton and Northville. A little more cookie cutter though. If you are looking specifically at towns, I can give you feedback. Feel free to PM me.

Default Rentals in Detroit area...

I live in Wyandotte (SE city of Wayne County) and I'm not sure if you're interested in looking at what is considered the downriver area (Grosse Ile is part of this) but there are rentals all over here and very affordable. I like Wyandotte and the downtown part of it is very nice, right on the river. If you are interested in this area let me know! Also, you are about 15 minutes away from Downtown Detroit (without traffic - meaning not during rush hour, etc.) My sister just moved to CA, but for the last year and a half lived downtown in the Lafayette Pavilion apartments (address is One Lafayette Plaisance, Detroit, MI 48207) I have two small children (under 4 yrs) and we always drove to her apt to go walk around Campus Marius area (Hard Rock Cafe, etc.) and even walked around down there during the Superbowl (that was fun!) You just have to be smart and the worst in my opinion is the bums asking for money, etc. I have lived in the greater metro Detriot area now for 11 years and have done everything from Tiger Games, concerts, eat at various places like Hockeytown Cafe, and have no problems with the area. It's kinda dirty, grimy and the roads plain suck but it's not a terrifying experience and some may as long as you know where you're going and don't stray. Seeing a Pistons game at the Palace in Auburn Hills is awesome - I've been a fan my whole life as well. Good luck, hope this helped!
