Hi, I've never posted anything on these types of websites but I need information. I'm a junior in nj and I know it might be "too early" to be worrying so much about college but I can't help it. I really want to go to college at Wayne State to study accounting or at least something to do with business. Unless there's other colleges in detroit where I can study the same things? Anyways, I have no idea what to do.

I don't know if it costs a lot to move to detroit and go to college there? I've heard that you get less financial aid if you got to an out-of-state college.

Also I don't know if it's hard to get in to Wayne State? I think I have average grades but then again I'm coming fom new jersey so does that matter on them accepting me?

I probably have other questions but those are some for now. I don't really have any adults to ask about these types of things and my guidance counsler is the worst. He doesn't really help us out so I figured maybe somebody here can help me out ?

It is not terribly hard to get into Wayne State. Wayne has some good programs. I do not know whether accounting is one of them. in State tuition is much lower than out of state tuition. I think that you have to live in Michigan for a year to get in state tuition. However Wayne is not a super espensive school.

There are a lot of dirrerent financial aid packages avaialible. First you need to fill out a form to get a Fasa rating. (You need to be poor). If your FASA is too high (i.e. your parents or guardians make too much money), then you will probably only qualify for private scholarships, and possibly adademic or sports scholarships.

It is not very expensive to live in Detroit near Wayne State. It will be difficult to live here if you do nto have a car, but it can be done.

As to other colleges do you mean the Detroit metropolitan area or the city of Detroit itself? THere are a lot of colleges in the Detroit Metro area.

I wouldn't say its too early for you to worry about this. Plenty of High Schoolers start thinking about college by the 11th grade. Well atleast when I was in HS. Mostly because we could begin taking ACT's and SAT's then, or atleast sign up for them, learn about loans and grants and scholarships. WSU is a fairly good school as far as business majors far as I know. It has a nice campus and it is improving. They have actually starting building new campus apartments for students only and there are already plenty in the area to choose from, although they probably will make you stay in the dorms freshmen year. The campus isn't too big but it isn't small either. The best part about it is its in the heart of city (Midtown) and not far from downtown. Lots of things to do. You could also check out U of Detroit Mercy, although I wouldn't recommend it. I go there and don't like it too much. It is a good school, more expensive (its a private school) than WSU, smaller campus as well, its just not for me. I'd much rather attend WSU. But I would still tell you to check it, plenty of people actually like it and it may be a better fit for you. WSU is not hard to get into and not as expensive as many schools. I'd check on scholarships and grants and loans you'd be able to get. Also check out the website and even call up there and ask questions. It couldn't hurt.

oh and no it doesn't cost much to move to Detroit. Detroit is a much cheaper city than most eastcoast cities. And if you do decide to go, make sure you ask about work study. That is something I wish I would have asked about before it was too late

Okay so I guess you can consider me poor so I guess I'm good with that?

I passed my writing test in like march in school to get a license but I haven't actually gotten my permit cause I can't yet. But I'm definitely getting a car before I leave. I have a friend who lives in michigan now and they told me that you need a car to get around over there so I know I have to make sure I take care of that.

And about the other colleges, I don't really know. I only picked Wayne State cause my friend took a class there and I think its the closest college to my friend (I'm moving by myself so I want to be close) and it seemed like a good school. It said stuff about accounting so I figure it would be okay?

I know it isn't expensive to live in but I also heard its "dangerous". I don't know if that's true or people just talk too much but I think I'll be fine. Other people consider where I live dangerous and I'm just fine.

And I might sound dumb but what exactly is work study? I mean the name is pretty obvious but still I don't know anything. .__.

What is prompting the interest in accounting? It's probably the hardest major in the business school? However, if you like it, and are good at it, it's the easiest field to get a job in once you graduate. Accounting jobs are easy to come by pay good money. The hours are a little longer than a regular job though.

Here's the link to the Accounting Dept at Wayne St.
Accounting Major | Wayne State University School of Business Administration

Spend some time surfing around the website. Email the professors. Talk the admissions office. Colleges want you just as much as you want them - so they'll be friendly.

Wherever you end up - good luck!

Like my mom would say, there is no stupid questions except those not asked. Don't worry I didn't know what it was until I started college either. Thats why I'm telling you to make sure you ask so you won't make the same mistake as me. Work study is basically a job set up by the school where you'll work for the school (usually in the financial aid, registrar etc office). You may get paid, not much but some extra money in your pocket and they often pay for your room & board or books or help with tuition or something. It depends on the school. But you definitely have to ask asap because work study positions often get snatched up quick because so many students need it to help with school expenses. Detroit's crime is overhyped to an extent. Anywhere you go you have to beware of your surroundings, not just here. Besides the area WSU is in is pretty safe. WSU also has patrol officers that are very visible. Once you're here and start to get around and hook up with locals you'll know what areas to stay away from.

I know accounting is pretty boring but I'm good in math and unfortunately that's really the only thing I'm good at. Well I'm also taking computer classes and I'm taking advanced computers next year. The classes are pretty easy but still. I put math and computers together and just thought why not accounting. I'm taking an accounting class and it doesn't seem that hard and my teacher told me it's easy to get a job in it and it pays good and i guess that's all i really care about. Anything with business and math pretty much interests me. I didn't really think it was that hard..is it? =\

That work study things sounds really good. But I really rather not live on campus or anything. I want to find a good apartment close to the school. I was just looking and I found some apartments that are reallyyy close to Wayne State. www.campusvillage.com ? It seems kinda cheap I guess but for some reason it gives me a bad feeling. Does anyone know about that???
