Most people would say "OMG ARE YOU JOKING? HAHAHA!" or something like that but it is true. I have lived in Clinton Township, MI for over 10 years. I visit Detroit often and say that it is great. Other than all the Empty Buildings and other problems it's mostly perfect.

I am not saying it is great to live at but it is great to visit. I really have to say that Detroit is one of the most Underrated cities in the United States.

Also here are some of the great places in Detroit!

1. Fox/Fisher Theaters
2. Casinos and Hotels (MGM,Greek town,MotorCity)
3. Detroit Princess
4. Belle Isle
5. Stadiums (Ford Field, Comerica Park)

Considering that Detroit--all of it, not just downtown--was once considered a highly desirable place to live, was one of the fastest growing if not THE fastest growing city in the country, and attracted people from all over the U.S. and the world, it's easy to see that even blight and abandonment can't keep a great city completely down.

Whenever we go into Detroit for anything, even though I've been there many, many times, I am always blown away by the historical architecture, the riverfront, the Ren Cen, and all of the other great "bones" that make up what still is, in many ways, one of the greatest cities in America. In spite of its problems, I love Detroit!

Where can I catch a first run movie in Detroit?

We will be in the city this summer and would love to see a box office best film downtown...something like Water Elephants or Pirates of teh Carribbean would be nice.

"Pirates of the Caribbean" is showing right now at the RenCen 4 theater in the RenCen, as a matter of fact:

Ren Cen 4 Theatre

If IMAX is more to your liking, then check it out at the Detroit Science Center over on John R. Of course, the OP may have been referring to real theater, as in, the Fox or the Fisher, which are both very lovely venues that offer some great world class entertainment and are most definitely in Detroit.

Not downtown, but there's a first-run theatre at Bel-Air on 8 Mile and Van Dyke.

Why not?

After all, aren't we discussing how nice THE CITY (not just the 1 sq mile of downtown) of Detroit is?

That is true, but from that I would not draw the conclusion that it is a "nice" city. There are reasons that it is not a "great" place to live in, and to gloss over that is a bit disingenuous.

All the places you listed are downtown. What percentage of the city is considered downtown? 2%? So if you went to Cedar Point and 2% of the rides were working and 98% weren't, would you rave about how "nice" it is?

No one seems to care about the rest of the city, even the boosters. If downtown were a separate city from the rest of Detroit, I wonder what downtowners would have to say about Detroit?
