I think retailers all over the country are hurting. General Growth (a big retail mall owner) filed for bankruptcy, "lifestyle center" plans are being scuttled, Borders is reorganizing, yada yada.

Wait first were told that the prosperous cities are best for business. Then next we are told the most dangerous and economically depress city: Detriot, is business friendly. This is just a complete joke.

It's not a joke if you read the article.

The reason Detroit was voted the best for business is because of low COL, nothing else.

It's the nothing else that's the problem for Detroit. If low COL were really the deal breaker land all over town would have been developed during the real estate boom.

Not just low cost of living, but Forbes cited a low cost of doing business, a more business friendly environment than years past in the city of Detroit, a resurgence of investment by Detroit's big employers in the central city, low cost of property, a highly skilled workforce that is being underutilized, and a more pro-business tax environment being created by Snyder (Forbes words), and that the "barriers of entry" for starting a business are very desirable in Detroit right now.

Some of the things that will attract a business aren't always the same things that will attract residents, but residents will follow businesses/jobs (even to friggin gawd awful North Dakota).

Maybe Detroit could try to get this market in the city: Wegmans

Maybe Dave Bing could pull some strings.

I meant theft from employees or customers. Retail businesses are hesitant to open for this reason.
