I think I made a prediction here a few months ago that Detroit would be the comeback story of the next 5 - 10 years. One of the advantages of being misunderstood and underappreciated.

Is anyplace in the country good for retail right now? Except in a few rare examples?

Define "good."

I think any place that's heavily served by several national retail chains already is good, but that's just me.

Your definition of "good" sounds like my nightmare. The city is certainly under-served by chain retailers, but I cringe at the thought of Detroit drowning in a sea of chain stores like most of America. I'd like to see a few chains, but I'm way more excited by new independents opening up. I can really get behind a local store that specializes in one product and does it really well. What Detroit gets criticized for most- having a lack of chain stores- is one my favorite aspects of the city. More independents would be nice, but a bunch of bland, homogeneous chain stores everywhere? Barf!

Well it could use a grocery store. That's my big suggestion.
