I lived in Royal Oak for three years and have encountered rats on a semi regular basis. I've heard from many that Royal Oak's rat population was evident. Have also heard that Madison Heights has a serious rat problem.....My question is this -

which suburbs have rat problems?

Rat stories?

Where do you live and what is the rat situation like?

Many of the inner-ring suburbs have them. My wife saw one in St. Clair Shores the other night.

I lived in R.O. for a few years and never saw one. Can't be that bad. I live in Chicago now and see them occasionally.

Down in Detroit we used to see them regularly at different festivals and the organizers called them 'festival bunnies' as a joke.

If you are really interested in the topic there is a wonderful book called 'Rats' by Robert Sullivan.

I've seen many in RO but usually they're dead or near vacant houses. I found half of a dead rat's body on the sidewalk the other day...

I don't know about Madison Heights, I'd imagine they have a sizable rat problem as well. There's alot of litter in Madison Heights and I imagine it would provide a decent food source for the rats.

I've also heard from people about rats in Hazel Park. Usuaully they're on dirtier streets like Muir, Harding or Mahan though. I've never heard of anyone on the average streets having a rat problem though.

I've seen many in Royal Oak as well...I used to leave at 11/Main and they lived in our garage and under our neighbor's deck. Both homes had dogs, so that definitely played into things with the dig waste aspect.

Used to see them a lot on garbage day as well.

A lot of long time Royal Oak natives have told me that they are very common in Royal Oak due to the restaurants....I hate those things!
