Hi, I'm moving back to the Detroit area and want opinions on the best bank for no hassle simple checking and savings accounts.
The ones with the most convenient locations seem to be Flagstar, Comerica and Fifth Third.

I used to bank with TCF. I had no trouble with them, but their locations aren't as handy for me. Any suggestions?

I recommend that you check to see if your employer banks with Comerica. If so, utilize Comerica's On the Job Banking program. Bottom line, as long as you direct deposit your checks, you never have to worry about pointless fees. They also have ATMs everywhere, literally everywhere. Flagstar and Fifth Third are sort of limited in the numbe rof branches and ATMs they have around, but I haven't haerd too many bad things about them either.

Otherwise, try People's Trust Credit Union (Federal Government worker's credit union) or Michigan First Credit Union (Detroit Public School Teacher's Credit Union).

PNC seems to have a number of handy branches around the Metro Detroit area.

I would go woth a credit union. Pooh on comerica after they left the city. And PNC? Where did they come from? Looks to be yet another move to assemble 3-5 other banks into a monopoly?

Flagstar is the only local major bank. Most credit unions are easy to deal with.

Co-op Services for one. It is a large national - maybe too large. Office on Five Mile in Livonia.
Consumers Credit Union (I just see their branches everywhere).
Wyandotte FCU has a branch in Holland Mi and is a service center for Co-op.
Wyandotte Federal Credit Union (Wyandotte, Michigan)

I do all my banking at OUR Credit Union in RO. If you live in Wayne County or far from Royal Oak you're out of luck though. I've been satisfied with them though, especially the low APR rates on my credit card.

If you decide to go with a credit union, be sure that their ATMs are on the Co-op network. This allows you to get money or even deposit checks at thousands of ATMs all over America without fees. I've done so in both Alaska and Hawaii, as well as in about any other area where we've traveled.
